They will both do the same thing for you. It really comes down to which fits you best. Mossberg's don't fit me well at all, so I like the 870's.

In general, I prefer Mossbergs over the 870, but with a pistol grip or thumbhole stock the Mossberg safety is hard to reach.

i like were the safty is on the mossberg just dont dont like them
i would look for a BPS turkey gun or a side by side i have a 870
thats my deer gun i just hate the were the safty is on it but i love my
BPS turkey gun i got it used but it was new gun unshot for $325,

Between those two i would say the 870. I have only owned two mossbergs a 500 and an 835 and both of them were noisy very loose tolerance clunkers. They were dependable though except the 835 was a rough feeder with 2.75" shells. Mossberg claimed in an ad that they tightened up the tolerances and made them quieter, but i hated those rattlers with a passion and never bought another one. I do want to pick up a 590 sometime in the future and see for myself. I hear their auto loaders are decent for the price as well.

If I hunted with slugs, had a reason to, I'd be tempted to send my 10 gauge H&R turkey gun in for a 12 gauge rifled slug barrel fit (same large 10 gauge frame for both barrels). BUT, I hunt with rifles and handguns for deer, the "turkey gun" is actually my goose gun. :D

I have a thumb hole Moss 835 I use it for turkey & snow geese. I have no probs with the safety. Took it duck hunting last year to.
