Which "Tacticool" .22??

I have the opportunity to purchase one of the following (unfortunately not all 3:mad:) and I wondered if anyone has experience with one or all regarding function and durability. My choices are the Sig 522, Smith M&P 15-22, and the ISSC MK22. All are in the mid $400.00 range and all seem to be well constructed. I do shoot a RRA AR-15 so I am leaning toward the M&P just for familiarity sake but I am curious as to your thoughts.

The M&P is nice and runs on just about anything but Remington ammo. You get a functional bolt catch which is handy, and mags are easy to load. I haven't had a chance to try the other two you mentioned.

I do have the new H&K/Walther/Umarex MP5 .22 (not the GSG version) and it's a lot of fun, too. It's been extremely reliable. I have about 1,500 rounds down it so far from about 8 different types & brands of ammo and not a single failure. It has better irons than the M&P15-22. Just throwing out another option.

Just FYI, I have seen a few reports and pictures of the stock breaking on the ISSC.
 
i cant speak for each gun, but i have a M&P 15/22 and its a beast. Great rifle overall, and fuctions just like an AR-15.
 
Ddpg, another vote for the S&W. Mine has a Primary Arms RDS, works fine. Be a bit careful about the ammo, page 10 in the owners manual lists recommended brands. Mine has about 2.5k of CCI, no issues.

I vote for the SIG 522. Uses the Black Dog mags and their 50 round drum is a hoot.

We've a pair of Sig 522 and neither have shot anything but the cheap Federal Bulk pack from Walmart and are about as reliable as a rimfire can be.
 
+1 on the Sig 522! Very reliable. I like the weight of it with the metal upper. Its also very easy to clean. I have a Vortex Strikefire on mine. Its great fun shooting the plates at the plate drop range.
 
slightly related, and not to hijack... but can you outfit a M&P 15-22 with standard AR aftermarket accessories? (like grips, triggers, forends) ?
 
Yes, you should be able to use any trigger made to standard small pin milspec in the 15-22. I haven't done it to mine yet, but I will eventually.
 
I have a ISSC Mk22 and its ok ... the problem I have with it is the mags are only 22 rounds and expensive ($35) when you can find them ... it shoots fine but if I'd known this before I bought it, I wouldn't have for that reason alone. (yeah, it was an impluse buy)

I also have a SiG-522 ... its great and uses Black Dog Machine mags which are easy to find & inexpnsive ... I like the fact the stock folds but it it seems a bit cheezy ... but on the up side it extends enough to fit both my 10year old daughter as well as me.

I've heard good things about the S&W but I've lost interest in AR's which is why I went with the SiG in the first place.
 
The M&P15-22 will take most ar accessories. Triggers are a direct drop in. They will take all milspec sized collapsible stocks. The pistol grip is a direct AR drop in. Handguards won't directly mount, but there is an aftermarket adapter that allows you to install any standard AR handguard setup. I think it's made by www.tacticool22.com
 
Of those three I'd go with the M&P15-22. Instead I went with the Colt .22 when they were selling for $400 but last time I checked they were back up to $500 so not the bargain they were a few months ago. If I could get a Colt at $400 that'd be my selection.
 
I have the colt (built buy a german company) and the remmington 557. they both shoot great. I got the colt so that I could train the wife and kids with an AR look/feel rifle. If I had to do it over, I'd probably buy a conversion kit, but all in all, they really are reliable and a blast to shoot.
 
I have the colt too. It has become the favorite rifle of my family and friends. I run Federal Bulk ammo through it with an occasional failure to fire, but there is a good strike on the base. Recently I put an EOTech on it. What a difference! Much more accurate and still an inexpensive thrill to shoot.

I have a Mk-22 and the weapon started to have problems firing. It would not fire at least 1 round out of every magazine I would fire. I could see where the firing pin hit the round, so I just dissmissed it as using bulk ammo. I bought some match grade ammo an went to the range, this time I found that the weapon only would fire about 10 rounds out of a 22 round clip. I took the weapon apart and found that there is an alan bolt in the rear of the weapon that keeps the reciever in place. this bolt loosened up just slightly and would cause a FTF if the reviever moved slightly forward. I found as you shoot this the bolt will loosen, and the looser it gets the more failures you will have. I added locktite tightend the bolt. i have since put over 1000 rounds through it with out 1 FTF or cycling problem usuing match grade ammo. I was very frusterated with the gun at first, and now I would be hard pressed to get rid of it, it is a joy to shoot.
 
I've been looking at the Sig 522 myself- it's a pretty neat gun, and after handling the M&P15-22, the 522, and a .22lr chambered AK variant at the last Saxet gun show I really liked how solid the 522 felt. The M&P felt light, and the fact that it takes proprietary mags was a serious con for me.

Additionally, most everyone I've talked to has enjoyed both rifles, but found that the Sig was more reliable and ate whatever ammo was fed to it. We're talking 1 failure to fire in 300 rounds. The M&P, owned by the same person, had about 15 failures in 300 rounds.

One advantage the M&P has over the 522 is that the M&P has the same "plug-and-play" options in terms of attachments that it's big brother, the standard M&P 15 has. The Sig, unfortunately, not only ships with no irons, but also is kind of a pain to find optics for. It's just an added cost to the rifle.

Overall I decided on the Sig just because it was more accurate with fewer problems, for similar cost.
 
might be because I'm a penny pinching miser, but the Mossberg 702 Tactical (another tactical AR .22 clone) is on my short list. They are finally available with a 25 round mag, making them even more tempting. They are also about half the price of the S&W.

And less than half the quality, from what I've heard.
 
Of the ones you mentioned, the S&W would be my choice. Also take a look at the Chiappa M-four, both will take AR parts.
 
I know the OP has already picked a rifle, but just thought I would add that I am very happy with my SIG522 classic. It has been reliable also:

One gripe I have is that the bolt doesn't hold all the way open after the last shot. It holds open against the mag and when you drop the mag the bolt moves forward.
