So, I want a tacticool plinker, but I want it to be a good plinker AND be good for small game getting.

I've been posting around and gathering the knowledge of THR as I am young and still have much to learn:D. Compiling info etc.

So I've narrowed it down to three rifles: The Kel-Tec SU-22, the S&W MP-15/22, and the Sig Arms 522.

The rifle I buy will have a Leupy FX-II 4x33mm thrown on it.

It will be used for small game (Headshots), and steel shooting.

Important factors for me.

Accuracy: Minute of Bunny Cranium at 35yds with good ammo (CCI MINI MAGS).

Reliability: How long can it go without cleaning?

Durability: How long will the gun last?

Chugabilty: Not ammo picky for cheap fun.

Known Problems: What problems is the weapon known to have?

Also, please no: "Just buy X rifle!" or "Buy something more practical and less tacticool!" I want a tacticool rifle!

This is a long one folks, any info is appreciated! :D

Thank you THR!

I like the Sig 522. Accurate, reliable, and feels really good. I don't own one, but I've shot a bud's extensively, and it's my favorite non-Marlin .22LR.

@Inebriated

I love my Marlin XT-22VR, A little heavy because of the bull barrel but deadly accurate.

Ready for something that scare the libs now though:neener:

Hell, if you want to just scare the anti's, show them Ruger's sales from this year alone. lol

I'm sure Ruger (Among other Manufacturers) is enjoying alot more business since We're stuck in the U.S.S.A for another four years.

But really I just want something cooler. :D

Wowing my Varmint hunting buddies ain't too bad either :neener:

The s&w 15/22 is the new 10-22

Light, accurate, comes with great sights, no pita rotary mags, strong aftermarket, AND ACCURATE

Seems to be pretty resilient to not being cleaned as I've yet to do so.

As to ammunition sensitivity how about the fact that it will run on and group with 60g aguila sss

And as a happy bonus the collapsable stock lets shooters of all sizes enjoy the plinktastac fun

Here you go:

That's as tacticool as it gets right there! You just need to add your Leupold 4x32mm and a butler creek nylon sling and you can employ all sorts of tactics against crows, foxes, beer cans, ect.

I have a Sig 522. It is a tremendous amount of fun. Mine has not been terribly accurate, however. I have not had it long enough yet though to test different types of ammo.
I like that:
-it has the heft and feel of a "real" rifle, looks and feels high quality
-it takes BDM magazines. The factory mag is a gen.2, which is on sale right now for $10 each; and if I ever get a .22 upper, I won't have to buy mags again
-folding stock is fun to play with (not sure what it's useful for, though)
-it is different
I don't like:
-the safety is in a bad spot. You can't flick it off with your thumb like an AR
-mine hasn't been very accurate, though again this would likely improve with finding better ammo
-it doesn't come with sights

I bought it as a trainer since it has similar weight and balance to an AR, and as a small varmint gun around the farm. If I was doing it over again, I would buy a dedicated .22lr upper. I handled the 15-22, and it felt a little too toy-like to me, but LOTS of people love them. I also handled the GSG MP5 clone, which actually felt more solid than the sig. I thought long and hard about buying it instead, but the long barrel and fake supppressor kind of kill it for me.

WRT your other questions: The sig is the only long gun I have that will eat some steel cased Rusky ammo I've had since the '90's (and I've tried it in 6 other rifles...). So this is good for "chugability" but I suspect that means it has a loose chamber which would explain the mediocre accuracy. I have about 500 rounds through this gun, and haven't cleaned it yet; it has had no stoppages with quality (ie not the crap mentioned above) ammo. Since you already have a scope, the lack of sights won't bother you, and you would probably see better accuracy than my red dot.

You want tacticool? Then consider the S&W as R.W.Dale posted. I have shot a few and while I have no desire to ever own a tacticool .22 rifle they do shoot well and are generally low maintenance. Your money and your call.

I have shot a S&W 15-22 and they are great. A buddy has a 522, and while I have not shot it yet, he absolutely loves it. I have no experience with the Kel-Tec.

Turn your front sight around.

LOL I noticed that the PO had it backwards but it was zeroed and I didn't want to change it at the time.

It now wears a ACOG reflex with no sights. I guess I need another newer picture

K-D-D;

I host an annual shooting event where people come in from all over the country. One fella has brought his S&W for two years running now. I've seen it run through thousands of rounds in a weekend without problems with the gun. Heh! His problems related to keeping it fed, he's willing to attempt to wear out the trigger. Gets his hits also. It's not as accurate as a good bolt gun IMHO, and costs about the same.

Which brings me to my major objection to the MP-22, it's over-priced. However, if you've got the cash & the itch, I can say from watching it perform that there doesn't seem to be a downside. Go for it. Hmmm, although I seem to recall that the mags are a bit pricey, but then I have a new T-bolt so I can't talk much.

The SIG is going to be the best of that bunch. I don't care for the S&W at all, due to it being almost entirely plastic. As for it being the equivalent of the 10/22, I don't agree with that. The KelTec is too entry-level for my tastes, even though I carried one for several years.

Here's a pretty good video that talks about all three you mention...if you can stomach this guy:

I'm not a "tactical" guy in any way -- I much prefer a wood-and-iron sight milsurp -- but I have a M&P 15-22 and absolutely LOVE it. Highly recommended and tons of fun.

I've not had a single malfunction with my 15-22 and I don't feel it's overpriced at all for what you get, especially the magpul edition and threaded barrel. Plus, nearly every AR accessory will fit it.
The light weight and collapsible stock are a huge plus for young shooters.

My 15-22 is reliable. It shoos everything I feed it. It shoots about 1 inch at 25 yards. It is light weight and good trigger for an AR. It is a great squirrel rifle. I get plenty of squirrel head shots. I have it set up like my 3 gun AR. It makes 3 gun practice much cheaper.

I do own one and it is BOSS!!!

It is accurate, especially with Federal and Mini Mags, and I wouldn't trade it for ANY 10/22.

Edit to Add: the 522s mags are not the typical plastic see-through junk like the M&P22s or the like. They're sealed, keeping out debris, and quite a bit more robust than the typical tactical .22 mag. Can't go wrong with Black Dog!

I vote the 522. Mine was superbly accurate and ran like rape. No matter what type of ammo it ate it. Trigger is smooth as glass and the metal upper handled like fullsize and not a toy.

Also consider the Umarex HK MP5 another excellent tacticool .22s that is accurate, reliable, and metal. Be forwarned HK accessories are stupid expensive though, and the mp5 design is pretty much proprietary. All the knock off stuff usually has either quality or fitment issues.

If you want an AR design id also pick the HK416 over the M&P as the SW just feels like an airsoft gun. IMO that should be a $350 gun max...not 450-500$.

+1 on the MP15-22, I love mine and it's a perfect AR platform for the 22 that you can with add parts on just like from the AR 15 world , the break down is the same and as far as polymer I don't get hung up on that. To me it's a cool ( tacticool ) rifle with many options. The fun factor is one of the best features of this rifle.

I've considered the Ruger, and I feel held back because I've heard stock accuracy isn't too great.

If I'm sacrificing accuracy I'll just go with a Tacticool .22lr.

I've got Marlin's for accuracy.
