I'm considering getting back into rifle competition...combat style to 360-yd at our Ft. Benning Range. Problem: I don't have a match-grade rifle. Thought I'd draw upon your experience and expertise to help my planning.
An considering either a SA M1A loaded or an AR-15 match. My 68-year-old eyes don't focus on open sights as well as they used to, so I'll need an optical sight, pretty much leading to a flat-top rifle. I like the free-floating handguards available on the ARs. I require sub-minute of angle accuracy...1/2 minute would be nice. Although I'll check on the local gunshows, I'll probably acquire through INET auctions. As I'm retired and have no pension, low cost would be nice, but is not essential...though I'd find it hard to justify going over about $1,500-$1,600 ready to shoot. (And, yes, I can find used M1A match rifles for that on INET, with sights!)
I see new Bushmaster and Olympic Arms AR-15 match guns in the $700-$900 range...anything wrong with those brands? I have a preban Colt SP-1 Car-15 in storage in Indiana (legacy of when I used to live in California!)...suppose I could get a match upper for that, but might need some trigger work also. I also have a Cetme that I can ring the 360-yd gong with every shot, but only about two out of five on the 500-yd gong, using South African Surplus...but the trigger is TERRIBLE, the mag release is difficult to operate...and it throws brass twenty feet out at 1 o'clock!
And, what about sights? I have Leopold VariX-lll 3 x 9 x 50 Sport and 4.5 x 14 x 50 Tactical scopes, but I doubt they'd do for rapid target acquisition in rapid fire.
Thanks for your help!
