I'm looking to build a Mauser sporter using one of these barrels from Coles Distributing.

LINKY

What I need to figure out is what type of Mauser 98 receiver I need. Large ring, small ring; I'm a little confused.

Assuming you're talking about this one:
98K Replacement Barrels
#BAR03 Size 1
Price: $99.95
Norwegian 98K replacement barrels.New old stock

you'll need a large ring M98 action. Be advised that not all Mausers are created equal; the Yugo M48 series Mausers are a mid-length action, and most parts for it are not interchangeable with a standard M98. Even 'standard' M98 actions are not all created equal; late-WWII German actions are inferior in quality and workmanship to pre-war or early-war actions; The pre-war Czech (Brno) actions from VZ-24 and M98/22 Mausers are excellent quality, as are many of the South American actions - many of which were made by DWM in Germany.

Books have been written on this subject, so I won't try to condense them into one post. If you're not certain what to look for, do some research before buying.

General rule of thumb, general, is that all K98 and variants there of are Large Ring. I believe the same holds true for the G98 as well but I am not 100% on that one. If you are looking for the strongest Mauser receiver for the money and do not want to go the custom route look into a VZ24 receiver. My K98 and VZ24 seem to share just about every part. Stay clear of the M48 unless you are looking for a "short" action, actually an intermediate action, that no K98 parts will fit.
