i went to my local shop to get a 22lr handgun, hoping for a wrangler but a no go on that. what they had has me puzzled on which one since they are close to price with each other. a used like new, a Smith & Wesson SW22 Victory Fiber Optic 22 LR Full-Sized 10-Round Pistol with 4 magazines for $291.50 otd, the other is brand new Ruger MARK IV™ 22/45 with the easy take down button and 2 magazines for $318.00 otd. which one would be a better deal? thanks

Better deal?

Well I really don’t like the S&W Victory so I would say the 22/45.

OTOH, I don’t like the 22/45 version of the MK series and probably wouldn’t buy one for what most folks would consider a fair price.

Whichever one fits your hand better. I have a Victory because I like the ergonomics better, but they're bot good pistols.

which one would be a better deal?

Yes.:)

Which model MKIV Fourty Five?
Any of the Lites, yes, just a standard, no.

Since I have no Victory, I would get that. But I haven't even held one yet, it might not like my hand.

I have held, and love thoroughly the way it feels, a Smith and Wesson model Fourty One. The longer of the two barrel lengths leveled best. Both above my means at the moment.

Can't go wrong with a Ruger. Heck, can't go wrong...;)

Let us know what you get!

It would be very hard to make a wrong choice there. Mrs. McGee & I have 2 Mk IV 22/45s and love them. Never had a Victory, but wouldn't mind picking one up.

I've shot quite a few of the Ruger 22/45 'Lites' after trigger work and some internal smoothing, so that's why I don't own one personally. They just seem to bounce around at the muzzle more than I care for, so I find that sequential target acquisition is a bit slower.
I have several Ruger Mark pistols, including a Mark IV Competition Target where muzzle flip is not as drastic as the 22/45 pistols, so I like those quite a bit:

My Browning Buckmark Contour is another .22 pistol that I'm getting to like, now that I have the trigger and extractor system to where they work to my liking:

And then I like the Volquartsen LLV pistol because it stays pointed so well:

Ruger.

I have not owned a Ruger .22 but I did own an S&W 22S. The Victory looks very very similar in operation and it uses the same grips and it appears the same parts. The most ammo finicky gun I have ever owned. I sold it with glee after one too many let downs.

Lots of my friends have Ruger 22s and other than the older ones and their takedown issues they have all been very happy with them.

If it’s the Wrangler you want order it online and have shipped to an FFL or have your LGS do. Don’t compromise based on what they have in store.

Of the other 2 mentioned, I’d get the Ruger

I would buy the Ruger myself but I really like Ruger autos and have owned several over the years. The only two I own now are both standard models. A 4" made in 1976 and an unfired 6" made in 1981. I won a lot of trophies shooting a 1981 MKI with 6 7/8" barrel back when shooting falling plate matches.

But if the Wrangler is what you are really wanting thats what I would hold out for. And for the prices you listed in your first post you are close to enough to skip the Wrangler and buy a Single Six with both cylinders used.

Both are excellent pistols. I would go for the Smith & Wesson as I do not like the configuration of the MKIV Ruger. Just my .02 cents!

After going through several .22 pistols I ended up with a used S&W Model 41 and feed it CCI-SV exclusively.
It suits me very well.
YMMV of course.
