President Obama Believes in the Second Amendment. He Also Believes in Common Sense.

Thank you for your petition.

President Obama strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms.

That's never been in question.

But the right guaranteed by the Second Amendment carries with it certain responsibilities, and there are commonsense steps we can take right now to protect our children and keep our communities safe. For instance, we can close the loopholes in the background check system that make it too easy for criminals and other dangerous people to buy guns — an idea that has the support of 90 percent of people in the United States, by the way.

So here's what we're doing.

Fully consistent with our Second Amendment rights, we've put together a proposal to help prevent tragic mass shootings like those in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, and Tucson. If you want to see the specifics of our plan, you should visit WhiteHouse.gov/NowIsTheTime.*

And whether or not Congress passes gun safety legislation, President Obama is already taking steps to make our country safer with executive actions. He's strengthening the existing background check system, giving law enforcement officials more tools to prevent gun violence, ending the freeze on gun violence research, making schools safer, and improving access to mental health care. You can read more about that here.

While these are each important steps, they’re not a replacement for Congressional action. Passing commonsense gun safety legislation to expand background checks and to make gun trafficking a federal crime is essential.

So we'll continue to push to make that happen.

*BTW, their own link is bad, I put in the correct one

Gee, we are making progress. I bet Herr Hitler didn't have a web site where German Jews could lodge complaints. Of course it would have made the same difference the current WH site does.

Needless to say, the names of those who post on that site will be "taken down and used against them."

Why didn't Obama and the white house answer any of the secession petitions? They got far more signatures.

Hasn't it already been proven that no such "loop hole" exists?

It's a new kind of maternal tyranny. You complain to the administration, and the administration complains right back--pointing out how difficult life is for it with Congress being such a bad husband, and why don't you think about someone else for a change young man! Go clean your room and stop complaining.

Probably because if you're going to secede, you don't ask permission/petition first from the government you plan on leaving... If that course of action were to be successful, it would just have to be done by the sovereign state that wanted out. The Obama administration must realize that much and figured the threat was empty if the people were asking the government if they could do it.

What is this "freeze on gun violence studies" of which you speak, Komrade Obama?
My bad, "gun violence research"
MUCH MORE IMPORTANT

I don't understand why the don't just hold a public vote in say Texas. I would be interested in the turnout.

Okaaaay, the threads turning into a rant and that's useless.

Come back when there's a discussion about developing a plan or doing something constructive instead of just bashing POTUS.
