Who has completed their Gun Collection? - No more guns to buy

I thought I was done ... and then I found an early NIB Model 7 LS in 7 SAUM ...

No more until I sell at least a couple.

I was done almost 4 years ago when I retired. Started selling safe queens and other stuff that I didn't shoot much anymore. But somehow I now have two more handguns and several more long guns than I did when I retired. Gotta start selling a few more this year.

I actually own a few less than I did a couple years ago. I continue to trade on the margin, so I think of myself more at a refinement than accumulation stage. There really are more on my "I should probably sell that one" list than on my "I'd really like to buy one" list. But as I've said before, I'm open to targets of opportunity, especially a bargain I know I can enjoy for a while before at least breaking even when parting with it.

I enjoy building bolt action "Remages," and tend to accumulate parts to do so. Typical process begins when I find a deal on a Remington action, which goes into the safe. I'll then keep an eye open for a stock, trigger, bottom metal, etc., generally bought second hand on the gun boards. About that time I start thinking about what cartridge it would be fun to play with, limited of course by the action length. Once decided, I'll order a barrel when McGowen has a sale. Eventually, I'll get around to putting everything together, and voila! Another rifle appears in the safe. This is motivated more by the fun of putting the gun together than wanting a new gun for a specific application. Sort of like a kid who doesn't really collect models; he just enjoys building them. That said, I don't currently have an unbuilt action and I'm not actively looking for one.

So yeah, I think I'm about as close to done as I can be at this stage of life. I expect when I retire, I'll actually downsize to a tighter collection that gets more use.

Honestly, I ain't there yet, but I'm getting close.

The want meter gets revved up easily, but then if I sit on it for awhile, I realize I'm good. I'll put it this way, I'm getting to where all the guns I own I'm pretty sure are keepers, and it's going to take a lot to get me to buy another one.

I’m not trying to fool myself just because I haven’t bought anything but a couple stripped receivers for their cool factor. But lately my spare cash has been going into a Baja bug I’m building (62 ragtop) ... but it’s purpose is to get around on a couple friends farms to stretch out to 800 yards & beyond ... just put new bigger tires on it ... but now I need to lift it so they don’t rub.
But in this endeavor I’ve fallen into a group of bug guys ... a few are into restoration, a few are into Baja’s and a few others are more into street and rat-rods.

In all seriousness, all of my 'needs' and most of my 'wants' are met, so my gun collection is pretty close to complete. There are only a handful of things that I might (one day) actively seek that I do not already have. That said, if the right bargain presented itself, I might still pick something up.

Check back with us in a couple of years, Mr. McGee, and give us an updated account of your "needs vs wants" conundrum. Past having a 30-06 rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, .357 Magnum and .45 ACP handguns, and a .22 rf rifle and handgun; unless you're headed to Africa looking to settle a score with a Cape buffalo, pretty much everything else in terms of firearm "needs" are in the "wants" category. And, "in all seriousness", wants, sorry and happy to say, are never over. :)

I'm done...................... Yeap I'm done..................... for this week.
Now seriously, I've never consider myself as a collector, just a connoisseur or may be an firearm enthusiast if you prefer.
Because, buying books about the firearm brands or models please me as well.
Some firearms represent the peak of it's time e.g.: Garand vs Mauser that is another attraction point.
If traveling abroad for vacations is the topic at the round table have to include art museum and military museums. lucky me, wife always agred.
For sure a big aficionado of mechanical engineering in general.

I thought I was all done until I saw this one today. I've seen nicer in the $450 range but more than I wanted to spend for something I'll likely only shoot a few times. Its far from mint but pretty decent and was only $185. It's all correct except maybe the front sight and has a decent barrel ... it was an impulse buy.

just one more to go, well - maybe two or three, but I'm getting close, just a little further to go. almost there.

I got my last gun in 2009 when I had a semi custom 6mm Rem. built on a Rem 700 Action with a Douglas air gauged barrel. I had a brand new CDL stock which I had glass bedded with the barrel floated to use on it.

I know that many people will say, "Aaaa, there's always something you'll want or need" but I am really a purpose driven gun owner, every gun I buy gets used and it has to have a purpose to be purchased. I used to shoot and hunt with my dad a lot but after being in the Marines really fell out of shooting guns for fun like I used to. I don't mind popping off a few rounds but just shooting for the sake of shooting isn't fun for me and I've never been a collector of anything.

I really only enjoy shooting at my house because it's convenient, I hate having to drive to gun ranges and waiting on firing lines, so being able to shoot at my house is nice. Nowadays I only shoot when I'm sighting in for hunting or hunting. If it's warm enough to shoot then I'd rather be fishing.

I do have 2 very young children so when they get older perhaps I will get back into shooting.

When I say my guns are purpose driven it means everything I own (except 2 guns) are all solely bought for a purpose and to be used. I have a bolt action rifle, bolt action shotgun, and muzzle loader (3 other muzzleloaders that no longer work but probably only need a good cleaning) for deer hunting. I have a semi-auto shotgun for bird hunting, I have an two AR15s for self-defense/varmint hunting, a .22 single action pistol for plinking/varmints, and two 9mm semi-auto's for concealed carry and home defense. The 2 guns that are not purpose driven were gifts from my father, an 8" factory Magna ported blued Colt Python and a 6.5 with a Fajen stock. Those don't get used, everything else does.

I just completed my collection yesterday with the purchase of a S&W 629 pre-lock .44 mag Mountain Gun for deer hunting and backup against bears when bow hunting. I also own no wood stocked guns besides the Fajen. I've always preferred the look of Stainless and composite stocks and for me form follows function, they just have a much better chance of not rusting or putting a dent in the stock when dropped.

I have no need or desire for any other guns.

Has anyone else completed their Gun Collection?

I do expect to have to purchase some guns more as my kids get older and I gladly will do that as I hope they take up hunting, shooting, fishing, and the outdoors.

Hmmm, As I ponder this question I wonder , does one ever really complete their "Gun Collection" ?
