Who here has a "Yard Gun"?

We live in a Chicago suburb with a very low crime rate, but it's not crime free. We've had a few break ins on my block, an armed robbery in front of our house a few years ago and someone being shot during a robbery not far from us a few weeks ago. At the very least, I pocket carry my P938 when working around the house.

I have several, designated as being the lightest thing available so it won't pull my shorts down to my knees. Right now it's a Taurus PT22, others include a NAA Zblack Widow, Keltec P32 and an Astra Cub.
No crime in our neighborhood for 15 years. But I walk crooked if my right front pocket is light ;)

No. From what Ive seen where I live the home invasions and such happen down in the hood and are almost always drug/teenage kid related. Ive never heard of one in the part of the city I live surrounded by Doctor, Engineers and Lawyer types in and certainly not while someone is doing yardwork. I could see it on a big spread where you might bump into a rattlesnake every now and then but the wildlife is sparse on these 1/4 acre residential lots other than a skunk every now and then.

I decided God meant for grass and weeds to grow . Not be cut down every few days . This year my yard has been trimmed 1 time with a weed eater . Love it the wild animals like it also . Down with yard work More time for shooting . Also reduces chances of break ends . A junk car in yard a broken down fridge or stove on porch. They move up street to a richer looking home .

I'm in rural Indiana on 5 acres. When I'm on my own property I open carry. Typically a .40 Shield.

I need to get a good holster for my WW II 1911.

Just because. Seems right.
Here are a few good 1911 holsters that will keep your gun safe and secure when working your property. They look darn good too lol. All are from the same company but in different color leather. I have the black one and might get the brown one too.

Sounds like a good recipe for rural camouflage though if you tried that in more urban areas it would likely get you a citation from the Building Inspector to clean up your yard and mow your lawn.

It's really an every day and all day thing but when I do yard work I also always have either a .380 s/a or a .357 snub on me........always!

I only have a yard gun on me if I forget to take one of my smaller EDCs out of my pocket while I am doing stuff in the yard.

I live in a pretty quiet sprawling neighborhood on a 1/3 acre lot in a small suburban town to a larger city. I don't see many cougars or wolves or packs of feral dogs. We have a few instances of teenagers vandalizing things every once in awhile in the off hours, but carrying a firearm while I mow probably wouldn't solve that short of them potentially seeing one on my hip during the day thus not TPing my house at night:evil:

We do get a few wandering dogs from time to time. Most are friendly neighbor dogs that have gotten out for a walk without their owners knowing. None are more than the typical good ol' mutt or popular domestic family breeds (labs, retrievers, terriers of various flavors). No Rots or even big Mastiffs or even large German Shepherds.

Strangers are pretty rare as we are not right off the highway or interstate or near anything someone could pretend to be lost finding as a foot in the door tactic. The next town over did have a few fake contractors try to talk their way in to places to case them for later burglary, but I AM a contractor. So whatever work I had done that I can't do myself is through a network of known peers.

In short, unless I left my lcr or pico in my pocket, I don't see much of a reason (for ME) to consciously pack a pistol while I do yard work. I could see the need for those way out off the beaten path or on acreage with bigger critters, but arming up to push a mower for 30 minutes isn't high on my priority list.

Now, I have been chased by a dog once or twice when I go for a jog. I run before the sun comes up with the aid of a head lamp. My neighborhood is mostly lit by the porch lights of the houses, so illumination isn't great. The dogs that came after me were mostly running for sport and stopped after a couple houses, and I wasn't running at a full tilt to get away. They weren't busting after me over my leisurely 5 or 6 miles an hour. I carry a cheap baton in hand at times for that, but have never needed it.

I always carry when we go for a long walk, though. I feel pretty secure that my several blocks are safe, but when I'm off my turf I don't mind a pistol in my pocket just in case. And, of course, I always answer the door armed.

I do as well. My trusty 2-1/2" Bulldog in an owb holster. Hardly even notice it's there anymore.

My yard gun is typically whatever beater I have at the moment since it's guaranteed to get filthy and banged around while I'm working outside. Currently it is a well used but 'refreshed' S&W M28. I also have a Savage 42 .22mag/.410 that I stick in a shotgun scabbard I have lashed to the roll bar on my tractor.

I can't say I have a specialized weapon for the YARD . My EDC suffices and that's probably due to my lack of imagination for every other anticipated threat scenario.

Could be your lack of imagination, could also be that you don't have a yard or don't do the sort of yard work that justifies a dedicated gun.

My carry guns are really nice 1911s and I don't see any point in subjecting them unnecessarily to the roughing up that my yard guns get. When I'm cleaning up after the animals, feeding them, working in the garden, the fields, the woods, building something or tearing something down, under a car, digging holes, putting up fences, whatever, the gun I'm wearing gets banged around, knocked up against stuff, they get covered in dust and dirt. All of that is hard on a gun's finish, hard on the grips, etc.. So, it makes sense to me to wear a gun that I'm much less concerned about getting scratched or dinged, hence, the yard gun. If all I was doing was mowing a lawn in the suburbs it wouldn't matter so much.

Yard gun? No what I have is an EDC that's with me in the yard, toilet, couch and everywhere else I'm at. Isn't that what an EDC is supposed to be?

I suppose I almost always have my EDC on unless I am in the pool. My "yard" guns just do specific tasks better or without making my ears ring more than normal.

Could be that I have substantial acreage which requires attention which also includes mature hardwood growth habitat for Turkeys, Whitetail Deer, Black Bears and the nettlesome presence of Coyotes.

I don't dwell in the land of the what ifs, thus I'm pragmatic and being a pragmatist if my EDC is not sufficient then it won't be and most likely I won't have time to kiss my backside good bye. :what:
