Ok guys... and gals I have a question and need a good sound answer.

I am sending a rifle back to the manufacture for a warranty repair. I went to UPS today, had the gun all packaged up and placed the box on the counter. The kid behind the desk asked what was in it and I advised a gun. His boss pipes up and says they can not ship guns per federal laws and that if she ships same she will be subject to a $60,000 fine. The UPS guy actually walks in to pick up the packages going out of her store and he advised she was correct. The UPS guy told me I need to go to the main UPS distributing center to have the gun shipped next day air and same will cost me around $80.00. I left the store pissed off. :fire:

I called the gun manufacture, the telephone operator checks with the boss, they advise that they have been selling guns, taking returns for over 30years and have never heard of such a thing. They tell me to go to another UPS store.

I just want to know who is right. I plan on going to a different store as soon as I know what the deal is here.

It is a rifle, go to the post office. Even sending it registered mail is a lot cheaper than UPS. Send it priority with insurance.

Call ahead, usually when I send a rifle somewhere they want to see the FFL. With it going back to the manufacturer they may not need that.

Any time I send a gun UPS or FEDEX, I will go to the distribution center. The storefronts don't know the rules so they make them up as they go along, IMO.

Guns freak people out, and most are pretty ignorant about what's legal and what's not.

Carriers have written policies, usually available on line. Carrier offices have policy manuals and the employees should be able and willing to look these things up.

And a central office has people that know the policies and they can be called by the clerk. Insist that they do so.

Because guns are not common shipments in some offices, expect the clerks not to know the policies and politely ask them to find out. I've had this issue with UPS, FEDEX, and the post office. In the end, the shipments get made. Once you find an office that knows the rules, always use the same site. I had to train the postmaster where I live. Now she ships rifles for me priority mail without a hassle. Same with FEDEX. UPS is inconvenient, but they've shipped for me as well - after getting educated.

Thats kinda what I thought, thanks Bob, I feel like calling that dumb ass tomorrow and giving her a piece of my mind... Oh that wouldn't be civil. I guess Ill just let her keep loosing all the money she complained about not getting as she said she turns customers away all the time who want to ship guns, I could add some four letter words but Ill refrain.

Jimmie, I think Ill you the good old USPS - thanx

You went to a UPS Store. They will not take firearms for shipment there. You have to go to a real UPS depot to ship it. If you read their firearms shipping 'Terms & Conditions', you'll see that enumerated.

Note: Firearms are not accepted for shipment through UPS Internet Shipping, UPS Drop Boxes, or at The UPS Store or any third party retailer.

FedEx is the same way.

That's just the way they operate.

I use USPS for long guns - they're cheaper and easier.

Yes, you must go to the main distribution point to ship guns. They will not take them at drop off points.

Well Ill just use USPS, from what Ive read it appears they don't get their panties in a bunch over shipping long guns.

I've had the same experience shipping a pistol to a 'smith for work -- UPS Stores won't ship firearms, but actual UPS shipping centers will do so with zero fuss.

I have had several bad experiences with my local UPS shipping center. Finally at the advice of my brother in law who is a UPS driver, I just schedule a pick up from my front porch. The few dollars that this costs is off set by not having to drive to the UPS center. Not to mention saving myself a great deal of aggravation.

His Hindu boss pipes up and says they can not ship guns per federal laws and that if she ships same she will be subject to a $60,000 fine. Nothing here is intended to be racial, I just want to know who is right.

If race has nothing to do with it, why are you even mentioning it?

Oh, and by the way -- you're wrong, wrong, wrong. As was said upthread, firearms are only accepted at UPS hubs. UPS stores aren't actually UPS, they're merely affiliated and sort of renting the UPS brand for its recognition power.

As others have said, UPS Stores don't ship firearms. You must go to the actual UPS distribution facility customer counter. Take a printout of their policy with you, as sometimes the counter staff doesn't know what is going on either.

UPS will ship rifles ground. They require that handguns go next day air. I know you are shipping a rifle, but for reference, use "UPS Next Day Air Saver" service if you are shipping a handgun, it will save you about $15-20 off their "regular" air service. It's just afternoon delivery instead of morning.

UPS stores are completely separate franchise entities. Their only real connection with UPS is the name. They can't even bill a UPS business shipping account for a shipment that you take to them without a prepaid label.
I just schedule a pick up from my front porch

You can't do this for handguns unless you have a daily pickup business account (driver stops at your facility to pick up every day, regardless if you are receiving packages). While they might pick it up, you won't get paid on an insurance claim if they lose it due to your non-compliance with their policy. Read the UPS firearms policies linked a few posts above.

I agree, USPS will be cheaper, and should be no problem on your end--BUT check with the recipient that they will receive firearm shipments from USPS. There are some that state they will only accept shipments from a particular shipper. I dunno why, but I suppose it's their prerogative.

That sounds awfully racial to me....
They tell me to go to another UPS store that a Hindu does not operate and send it from that store.
So what you are telling me is, not only are you talking racial trash but so is the person at the gun manufacturer?
Nothing here is intended to be racial, I just want to know who is right.
Nothing racial?? YEAH RIGHT.... You are not only wrong about the storefront being able to ship a gun you are also wrong about what you said not sounding racial. You should be ashamed of yourself! This is the 21st Century, get out of the Dark Ages already.

The UPS guy told me I need to go to the main UPS distributing center

Sorry, he's right.

The UPS Store near me has a memo taped to the counter that basically says no firearms will be accepted at that location and must be taken to the distribution center 20 miles away.

Actually it's company policy from what I gather, not a legal issue.

Here's another thing. I used to send out guns via one of those Pack n Ship type places in town. One day they refused to send it, and asked if they would verify the policy. A week later I went back and they said they *could* ship via FedEx from their location provided the firing pin was removed and verified as such. Now I was trying to ship out a HiPoint carbine, that obviously didn't work out, so I had to send it through the airport hub.

A few months ago I had to ship a Mini-14 to Ruger for a factory level repair. As directed I packaged it up & brought it to the post office. I shipped it registered mail with insurance & delivery reciept. It got there fine & after the fix Ruger sent it back to me UPS right to my house. No I am not a FFL guy. They are allowed to ship it back to the same guy(long gun) that sent it. I'm sure some postal people that don't do it often wouldn't have a clue & you may have to point them in the right direction or go elsewhere. Of course some different state or local regulations may come into play.

I was told by the people at Hi Point to tell them that I was shipping machined parts back to the manufacturer.

Eliminates your "O my G**, YOU CAN'T SHIP A GUN'

My UPS center requires a firearm to be double boxed. However they can't show me that requirement in writing. Has anyone else encountered this?

I was told by the people at Hi Point to tell them that I was shipping machined parts back to the manufacturer.

If the package ends up lost, it may be a little difficult to collect the insurance on it once they find out you weren't exactly truthful about the contents. They will find out, because you will (should) report the missing gun to the police so it can be entered into the stolen gun database.

I guess you will have to set your own personal limit on where to draw the line between "machined parts" and a firearm.

I just shipped a gun to a smith the other day, and made sure they knew what was in it so I could get my 3K worth of insurance. I also went to the FedEx hub and didn't have a problem.

If it's a long gun just use USPS priority.

A lot of UPS places are really UPS "Stores" and in my experience they do not ship any firearms at all. You have to go to the actual UPS hub or FedEx hub and deal directly with the company.

Not sure why there's a need to attack someone's alleged religion here, though. You should edit your post. Or are we going to start referring to people we don't like as "that Mormon" or "that Catholic."
