I was in Walmart again this morning looking for some 22LR (and they had a few boxes :neener:))

When I was checking out I noticed a Leupold 3-9x50 Rifleman scope on clearance for $249 and asked about it; she said she could do a little better on it if I wanted it ... I asked her if she could do $150; she looked for the box and it was gone, so she said sure!

Question; how does a "Rifleman" compare to a VX 1 or 2?

I think is is worth that price easy. I assume Leopold stands behind the warranty. I think that is a good purchase.

What reticle? Seems like a bargain.

Keep your receipt to prove you are the original purchaser.
I've never had to prove though I've sent several back for maintainence or repairs.
The rifleman is a basic model, but are excellent scopes with impeccable warranty service.

I bought a T/C Contender that had a 1.5-5x Vari-X III on it. ( once their top of the line scopes). The scope wouldn't hold zero, and image would "jump" when power ring was turned.
I got a phone call from them several weeks later, (their service is a little slow). Nice woman told me that they couldn't fix my scope. Wanted to know if I wanted jobber cost on the scope new (~200.00), or a NEW VX3 ???. I got the scope!!! It's even better than the Vari-X III it replaced.
Also; sent a VariX II back for a detached reticle, no cost.. Sent back another to replace heavy duplex reticle with a standard duplex. Again, no cost! They even paid return postage.

I buy all my Leupolds used or on sale like you did. All my favorite rifles wear Leupolds, or nothing at all!

IMO you did ok, though I don't care fo 50mm objectives.

This one I believe is the fine duplex reticle ... I looked on GunBroker and didn't see any 3-9x50 Rifleman under $285 + shipping ... I didn't know for sure, but getting it for $100 off their clearance price I was confident I was doing ok.

I have a couple of the 4-12x40 Leopold's and I do wish it had been one of those but they were $279 and she wouldn't come off that price.

After having problems with a couple other scopes that were in the $250-$350 range (Bushnell AR Optic) ... I've decided that if I'm doing to spend in that price range I'll get an older model Leupold instead of going with something else. I've been very happy with every Leopold I've ever had.

Bushnell now has a lifetime warranty too and is taking care of me on the 1-4x24 and even upgraded to a 4.5-18x40 (I already have one and like the higher magnification) but it's just not as good of a scope.

Don't own any riflemans, but have shot several rifles with them installed.
Can't tell you any specific differences to VXIs, money is apparently saved somewhere but my eyes can't tell the difference.

As mentioned, Leupold has as good a warranty / return policy as any company I'm aware of.

I have some rifleman scopes and they are fine, always hold zero. It seems the glass is better in the rifleman scopes than in the base model scopes i.e. the vx1 models in the past. I have dozens of leupold scopes and have never had to send one back.

You did OK. It's a good scope. Not exactly the VX-1 but way better than 90% of the other brands for the money.
It's a good scope, you won't ever ever regret that you spent a buck-and-a-half for it.
I have 8 Leupolds and 4 Nikons and 2 Zeiss. And one Rifleman. It's not like the others but it's a good scope.
Especially with lifetime repair, it will last longer than your grandson. Seriously.

I got mine for less than your $150 because I had a coupon at Cabela, but we both did pretty well.
Now, mount that scope properly and go shooting!

Leupold's higher end scopes and glass are all still made in the USA. Some of the lower end products - are not. No doubt their quality and performance are still worthy of the Leupold reputation, and the company is jealously guarding it. I took advantage of that buying a pair of their Yosemite binoculars in 6x30, BAK 4 glass. Excellent reputation from purchasers and the best I have - yet the front door price after all rebates was under $80. Well under.

You can get quality from Leupold but you don't have to pay out the wazoo for it. Probably the best kept secret in the shooting world as most don't keep up with the news about vendors. Their entry level goods are remarkable bargains and highly competitive at those prices.

I didn't even think to look under the caps for adjustments ... these look odd to me ... they don't click, they move smoothly?

I'm going to put it on something tomorrow ... haven't figured out what yet but since it will have to be zero'd anyway I guess it doesn't much matter.

Leupold Scopes

Superb,great,no equal, warrantee fantastic!!!

I have several. Send them back to Oregon if you have a problem.

It takes about two months to get them repaired. Email is the best way to reach them.

My average time is about nine weeks.

They are great folks. Just be prepared to wait a while.:)

I've got a Vari-X 6 in 3 X 18 which I sent back to the factory because the magnification ring was too hard to turn. After about 3 months, I got it back in exactly the same condition. I can't turn the ring while looking through the scope it is so hard. I have turned it hundreds of times and no change. At least they didn't charge me...

Question; how does a "Rifleman" compare to a VX 1 or 2?
You got a decent deal, but the answer is it would compare poorly to the 1 or 2. Do not confuse them with the earlier I or II, which also compares poorly to the current production 1 or 2.

I'm just impressed that you were able to anyone at Walmart down on price. Bravo!

I have a number of Leupold 'scopes - pistol and rifle - and none of them have ever given me a bit of trouble.

My first was a Vari-X II 3x9 with center pointed crosshair reticle, which has been sitting on my .30/06 for around 40 years now; I've shot and hunted extensively with that rifle/scope combination in hot TX summers and cold Minnesota winters (as well as 3 African safaris) and it's still going strong.

Leupold makes good stuff.

You got a great deal! Hmm....my best friend is the Sporting Goods manager at work (WM) , I'll have to check if he's got the Leupolds on clearance.......

When the Rifleman was initially introduced it WAS a VX-1 that had no options. It was offered in one configuration only whereas the VX-1 had different finish and reticle options. As well as a lot more options as to magnification choices.

The Redfield Revolution is also essentially the same scope.

Leupold has since upgraded the entire line of VX scopes. A current production VX-1 is a considerable step up compared to the Rifleman.
