I have an 1858 New Model Army revolver, 44 cal, that is marked "Lyman" on the top of the barrel and "made in Italy" on the side of the barrel, with various proof marks here and there.
Can anyone tell me which Italian company made these guns for Lyman?
And how does one remove the hammer and mainspring from this thing?
Thanks.

Tailwind,
I just finished shooting my Remingtons in the Uno Muy Malo Hombre shoot at Renton. It CAN be done!

If I could look at your gun I could tell pretty quickly if it is marked. Look under the rammer or along the barrel. There you may see a mark like the muzzle of an octagon barrel with a "U" in the bore [Uberti], or ASM/SM for Armi San Marco, or DGG/Euroarms/Armi San Paolo, Palmetto (palm tree), FAP inside a diamond or the word Pietta. I am unfamiliar with the Belgian markings. The older Lymans were Ubertis and good guns.

New Army ID

Thanks for the ID info. I don't have the gun in front of me right now, so I can't confirm which markings there are. I'm pretty sure there are no markings on the barrel under the loading lever.
I need to look the proof marks over a little closer to see if any match anything you described.
I did find exploded drawings of this model (at Dixie Gunworks, I think) for the Pietta and Uberti versions. The Uberti had the front sight mounted via dovetail, which mine has. Therefore I think it is Uberti.
I still haven't figured out the hammer removal trick.

Hellgate,
I looked at the marks on my revolver and didn't find any like you described.
I took a couple of close-ups for you to look at.
The funny one and "546" are on the underside of the barrel, the others are on the side of the barrel where it mates to the frame. The frame and cylinder have marks the same as the side of the barrel.
Do these marks look familiar?
Thanks for your help.

Upon closer inspection, the mark on the underside of the barrel looks like "DGG" (D next to the G's, one above the other, inside a circle) It's about impossible to tell from the photo above, but in the right light and at the right angle, one can barely see the letters. The stamp is only partially there and also appears to be double stamped.
I also forgot to mention that next to the "PN" mark on the frame are the letters "AD" in a cartouche.

Tailwind,
Sorry for not getting back to this thread sooner. This website doesn't sent notices of new postings.
I have both Uberti and a Euroarms Remingtons (sold the Piettas). I suspect that yours is a Euroarms (Armi San Poalo) with what looks like a double stamped DGG inside the circle. GREAT PHOTOS BTW! Both Uberti & Euroarms have a dovetailed front sight. The Piettas are a post. I've not looked at an ASM for years so I don't know about them.
....................Just ran downstairs and took a look at the Euroarms Remmie and it has the same crudely DGG in a circle stamped near the serial # under the rammer on the barrel bottom. You gotta Armi San Poalo (Euroarms) gun. I like mine for the smaller grips that it has. Some people get their knuckle rapped when they shoot it because the trigger guard is close to the grip compared to some other Remmies. I have no problems with mine but I don't have meaty hands.

All the makers have different grip sizes & shapes that even vary with the same maker over time so you can't just order "Remington NMA grips" and get something that is likely to fit.

Tailwind,
I just modified my settings and will be sent notices of new postings to this thread. I was wrong the site has more features than i thought.
