Who makes the Best revolvers today?

Question regarding fine revolvers. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the custom revolver work of Gary Reeder? The guns sure look fine on his website, but I know of no one who has ever owned, fired, or even handled his products.

Hmmmmmmm...hard to say.
My Taurus 85 in titanium is perfect.
Freedom Arms makes the best, but only single action and very expensive.
Rugers are accurate and indestructable, but heavy weight and heavy trigger pulls.
Smith is generally refined and quality built, but not as good as before.
I think if you want a new double action today, you have to try alot of different brands. Its not a simple answer.

David,

I figured that everyone other than me was too proud to mention a Taurus in this particular thread; good to see another southern gentleman pleased with the product.

Ps: By the way, the 905 is probably the best $200 gun I ever bought, and it is certainly the only $200 I carry on a regular basis.

Boarhunter,
I trust my life to my Taurus. I regularly go to the WORST areas of Atlanta with only my Taurus to protect me. I love Smith and Wessons and Rugers, but Taurus, despite its faults, makes wonderful revolvers. I tested every Ruger, Colt, and S&W available before I bought my Taurus 85.
I'd make the same decision again today.

The question IS:
"Who makes the Best revolvers today? "

NOT
"Who makes the best value for the money?"

Actually, those are pretty close to the same question. A revolver that I would buy is so close to "best" that there's really no difference. I want reliability, accuracy and ergonometrics. I love old Colts, but they're not in production any more.

I measure quality by performance. I just picked up a NIB Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. I took it out and put a cylinderful into a 2 1/2" group at 50 feet, shooting off-hand (no rest.) That's hard to beat with any gun, no matter who makes it.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsieroll tootsie pop ?

I think you should, ask the owl.

Better yet, ask the magic 8 ball. :uhoh:

If you watch King of Queens, you should ask Mentello. :scrutiny:

Oh well, I asked the 8 ball for you and it said "ask again later"

Good luck, you're gonna need it on this one.

You have to define the gun's purpose. If you are shooting any form of practical or speed shooting, the S&W trigger makes it the hands down choice. Other guns fit other purposes as well or better than a Smith. There are bad examples of every gun made.

I have never seen or handled a custom by Gary Reeder but from everything I have read he does some excellent work.

Actually these are totally different questions!

In practical term of usefulness there is NO difference between an Korth .357 magnum NIB, and a holster-weared SW 686 from 1992.

But the price is different!
And if you can get one of these FREE OF CHARGE you will choose the Korth I am sure:))

For transporting kids to the school a Wolkswagen Golf is as good as a Mercedes S-klasse, but which do you WANT?

Yeah, what if a company somehow came out with a twenty dollar revolver, that ... worked. Meaning it fired bullets.

FOR THE MONEY that has to be a better VALUE than a $5k custom revolver, no matter how perfect it is. But does not make it the BEST REVOLVER.

So a Raven .25 automatic would be "better" than a Korth or a Python if it cost more? :p

Which one has a bed you can put a full sheet of plywood in, a diesel engine, four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and is set up for towing a horse trailer? ;)

Is it in a caliber I want (like .357 or .45 Colt)? Will it put a cylinder full into 2 1/2 inches from a standing, unsupported position at 50 feet (as my new Ruger Blackhawk did)? Is it virtually indestructable?

If it meets those criteria, what more can you ask?

If it doesn't meet those criteria, then no matter what it costs I consider it inferior.

S&W and Ruger. I've loved gp100s, they're just too heavy to carry. I've had hit and miss issues with Tauruses.
The two S&W 642s I currently own are the finest CCW weapons I have ever had, period.

Thje Best? I think different people's idea of the best, will vary from one person to another. Your top end revolvers(ie,, Ruger, S&W, FA etc) all have Quality. Superior products that are highly accurate, and 110% reliable, The S&W 625 dominate's the IDPA and the IPSC. For good reason. They rock.
For games CCW, night stand, hunting and just fun backyard shooting, I'll take Ruger. GP100, Redhawk, and SRH.
