Anyone out there use extended magazines locked in on their home defense handguns? To me it makes sense- you don't have to worry about concealability and you get more ammo. Often times you can't bring a mag pouch with you. I've seen 15 rd. mags for the 1911, 30's for BHP's, Glocks, Beretta's, etc.

The only thing I've ever done like that is use Glock 22 magazines in a Glock 23. Gives the gun two extra rounds and it works fine. I've tried the 33 rounders by Scherer, they jam in every Glock I've tried them in. So, I wouldn't ever use those.

Not me.

I use the magazines the gun was designed to use. The same magazine that's in it while I carry it as my CCW gun and when I'm at the range for practice.

I have a bunch of the extended magazines for several of my autoloaders, but they are more of a novelty than anything.

I don't. Too many reliability issues in regards to those mags...maybe okay for range, but not if SHTF :)

I have some +5 extended Glock pre-bans that are dead reliable and I will occasionally use them. I also carry them as a reload. Really only a +3-4 as I carry my 17rd mags loaded to 16 and the +5s loaded to 19-20. For a house gun I have kept them loaded 21+1, no reliability issues, just for street carry in a metro area of this state more than 20 rd capacity =assault weapon. So I carry another mag. Effective law. The hyper extended mags aren't usually reliable, I've tuned a couple to run flawlessly in a BHP, but it's just not worth the chance.

I have 5 shells in gun and 5 shells on carrier for my 20g 1300. I think I won't need anymore than those. If I do, I'll execute a NY reload, pull out the revolver.

If you are talking about pre-ban factory standard capacity magazines, what's the fuss and worry?? My wife keeps my Ruger KP95DC under her side of the bed. It's loaded with a Ruger 15 round magazine. There are two more right beside it!!

I plan to keep my new 1911A1 under my pillow, as I am wont to do. It will be loaded with a Wilson Combat 8 round mag. I (maybe foolishly) consider any 1911 mag that is over 7 rounds to be "high capacity"!!!

For home defense I used to use the 21 round extended (SWAT) Mec-Gar mags in my Browning P35 as a backup to a flush fit mag. Did the same with my Beretta 92. However, I decided that the extended mags are not compatible with my shooting and the flush mags just provide better control and are more "tactical" so now I just use standard capacity mags as backup. :D

It's hard enough in the dark without having to mess around with extended mags.

The hyper extended mags aren't usually reliable, I've tuned a couple to run flawlessly in a BHP, but it's just not worth the chance.

I've never had any problems with 21 round Mec-Gars in my BHP or Beretta 92. I also had some Astra 19 round mags for my Beretta 92 that stuck out a little bit with a finger rest, but sold them when I sold the gun. They worked great and were very high quality.

Most of the extended stuff you see nowadays is complete junk. :barf:

Honestly though, the first thing I'll want to grab is the 30/30 and the pistol is only backup.

yes..i do..

I have a STI 9x23..have a 27 round mag in it..

Wondernine, I'm talking USA 30rd. mags for the BHP, I can make them sing, but I still think they are range only mags. The KRDs while very nice are subject to the occasional tipped follower/mass of bullets stuck halfway down in the mag trick. Never had any of the 20/21 rd mags. I truly believe in the stock FN 13rd mags, never seen one fail.

I think it's hard to find a BHP mag that DOESN'T work even if they're cheap aftermarkets. I've never had a problem with a KRD mag and I had 20 of the 17 rounders. I wouldn't hestitate to use those for carry or home defense if that's all I had. Personally I don't like the factory mags as they rattle like a gumball machine unless they're Belgian "pi" marked mags. I use the Mec-Gar 15 rounders.

As some have said an extended capacity mag can cause reliability issues. To me that just means that an extended range test is that much more important. If it can go several hundred rounds without trouble than why does it matter if it is a 7,8 or 10 round 1911mag, or 30 round Glock mag or whatever?

Personally, my Charles Daly 1911 is fine with 9 rounds in the 10 round mag. With 10 rounds it occasionally jams up the first round so I simply load up 10, chamber it and then I'm fine with 9 in the mag and one in the pipe. The 8 rounders seem to be just fine.

G35 with +4 extensions that have had thousands of rounds through them with typical glock reliability.

I wish I could trade my KRD extended mags for flush fit Ramline 15 rd mags. The Ramline BHP mag is well made, smooth blued steel that feeds flawlessly. When you put all 15 cartridges in it they do rattle a little.

Never have gotten the KRD mags to work right.

All my mags (17, 17+2, 31 or 31+2 round) are Glock factory mags, which came in their current configuration from the factory. I don't see why one or the other should be more or less reliable just because it has a +2 baseplate.
Currently I'm using a 17+2 as a "ready mag", but that's just because the Glock won't fit in the inner compartment of my locker if I used a 31/33 rounder.

I understand that the strange spring that the Ramline mags use becomes unwound and weak fairly quickly. Not from experience, but just what I've heard. And I also understand alot of people have problems with the Ramline BHP/Beretta mags in general. Ramline will not replace your "hi-cap" springs either, or so I'm told.

I prefer the Mec-Gar 15 rounders over all else. They feed perfectly, are VERY high quality, don't rattle at all regardless of whether it is fully loaded and inserted or in a mag pouch and Mec-Gar replaces everything short of the mag tube. If you sent it in they'd probably replace the mag tube as well if it went bad. :what:

Never have gotten the KRD mags to work right.

That's the first time I've ever heard that. And in my experience the KRD's worked perfectly. All of them. In two different guns.

G22's in G23...

...I routinely use G22 mag's (including high caps) in my G23 without a problem...only extend about 1/2" or so.

My other high caps flush fit...in my HG's, now in my AK's, that's another matter :D

CZ52'

i've got two mec-gar 13rd mags and a 14rd mag that came with the gun for my Hi-Power.

But, until I get the extraction problems solved, i'll continue keeping my 1911 with a 7-rd mag next to the bed.

A lot of those goofy extended hi-caps are of dubious quality, and not reliable.
