The Utah permit has reciprocity or recognition with 33 states.
It's a 5 year permit that only makes you take the course required for it once. Every 5 years when you renew it costs $10 bucks.

Anyway my friends company are doing courses for Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee residents. So i thought I would let you all know. If you are interested you can Pm for more details.

Trust me its a nice thing to have!!

here is a list of the states

I'm not sure how this will affect current non resident permits but there is a plan (I'm not sure if there is a numbered bill yet) before the legislature to make it so non resident permits will only be issued to people who have a permit from their state if offered.

The idea is that the loss of Utah reciprocity with certain states was economic protection by those states because people were simply seeking the less expensive Utah permit instead. Thus, this bill is to head off other states dropping UT. Sadly I'm skeptical it will restore any of the reciprocity.

As to residents there is a bill to do away with the requirement for a permit to carry concealed in UT. I wont to see final language on this bill to see just what the effects will be. It is probably a good move on a balance and permits will still be available for those that would benefit from reciprocity or other benefits it offers.

I looked at getting the Utah CCW but decided on Florida for several reasons. A few more states recognize it (35, I think), and it's good for 7 years. Slightly more expensive (per year) and requires a renewal course, but taking a 2 hour course every 7 years seems like a good idea. It took FL less than one month to process my application!

Got my Utah five years ago. Now up for renewal. Went to Florida. Utah no good there unless you're from Utah. Had to get a Florida. See no reason to reup the Utah as the Florida is good at all the same states plus Florida. Several states only recognize a permit if you are from the issueing state.

Funny....as soon as I leave Illinois in almost any direction, I can carry. As soon as I come "home" I can't. Great state....and now we're trying to drive out people and business with higher taxes.

I have heard my state (Texas) is trying to close this loophole for TX citizens.

If anyone would like to tell me I am wrong feel free. :) Just what I have heard.

Yes this is high on the Texas legislature's agenda this year. I have a Texas CHL and wanted a Utah for the additional states I travel in, took the course which was all of about 45 minutes, no range trime, no safety, no competence with any firearm, just a quick once-over about a few things and I'm approved.

I think it's silly to issue a permit without even having to possess a handgun, and not having to show any competence with a firearm. I support the Texas proposal to not allow Utah permits to Texas residents unless you also possess a Texas CHL. I think it just makes good sense. Just my .02:rolleyes:

I think the whole concept of having to get a permit is silly.

I have heard that for years but I never see any legislation proposed to actually do it.

I don't support it at all. I support Texas lowering the cost of our permit so people don't have to go looking elsewhere, but I do not support being forced to get a home permit if I don't want to.

And this is the best answer of all.

No renewal course is necessary. If you have a DD-214 no course at all.

I very recently got Utah in addition to my home state of Nebraska. If I understood my instructor properly, the only state I would gain with Florida's permit would be New Mexico, and Utah is comparatively less expensive. To date, my travels have taken me to New Mexico exactly once, so I went with Utah.

Interestingly, the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation put the wrong abbreviation for "Nebraska" on my permit, "NB" instead of "NE". I think I'll give them a call to make sure that doesn't need to be corrected.

I have seen the classes offered at Gun Shows here in Wyoming. Never looked into it though since I have my Wyo CWP.

I am currently on a waiting list to do the next available UT class here in the middle of the liberal state of Chicago. Scratch that, I meant Illinois. :banghead: I think if it weren't for Cook county we'd already have a CCW law.

I just renewed mine a few months ago and there was nothing about a 2 hr renewal course in FL. I just notorised it and sent the check and pictures like I been doing for 20 yrs.

I would like to get my ut, and possible florida as well, both states are reconized by all the same states as far as i can see, except fl doesnt rec. ut's and ut doesnt rec. fl, I live in NV, would be easier for me in ut

trakhack just to make sure you know, NM changed, the only other state they reconize is texas, doublr check this for yourself

I got my Utah non-res permit last year because I'm in the People's Republic of Maryland. Of course Maryland doesn't recognize it. I can carry in my neighboring states. But guess where I feel the most unsafe?

Personally, I have six CCW's, from six different states, one of which is Utah and two are redundant because I live in one and have relatives in the other. I travel a lot and want to be up on the laws in as many states as possible, besides, the more training the better and if stopped or it is needed I feel it is better to show the local LEO a local permit rather than an out of state one. The cost be damned. Lots cheaper than a firearm or ammo.

It appears that UT will be changing their non resident CCW requirements. I believe that they will require non residents to have a CCW from their home state before they will consider issuing the Utah permit. I hope that they "grandfather" those of us who only have a Utah permit as I just renewed mine.

I know that there's a lot of guys who have been unwilling or unable to pay the tarrif in their state. As an example, it costs nearly $300 to obtain a Texas CCW. This includes the mandatory school, digital fingerprints, photo, range time, and state fees.

My Utah renewal cost $10.

It depends on state. The law you just mentioned has not been officially passed yet. Indiana is $75 and you don't have to take a class you just walk to the Sheriffs office and your in and out.

Well if any of you ARE interested in getting one just contact me. My friend is doing courses in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. I think he would even be willing to go to Illinois if the class size was 5 or more. So just let me know!

Florida also issues non-resident permits and is recognized by 32-33 states. If you get a Florida and Utah permit, you can legally carry in any state that recognizes out of state permits.

I live in Florida so I have a Florida permit. I've considered getting a Utah permit too for the heck of it.
