Who was the orig. owner of my E. German Makarov?

I just picked up a beautiful East German Makarov. Who would this gun likely have been issued to? Police, military, civilian?

It is a 1963, the markings include the Y with 3 dots, the circle within the square and a K100 in a rectangle. It also looks like maybe an import mark running under the grip that looks like COLF DIST SVUIFKY 9M. Also a 133 hand engraved under the barrel on the slide. I am just curious about the history of the E German guns.

Believe that "COLF DIST SVUIFKY 9M" is Cole Distributing of Scottsville, KY

My understanding is that the EG Maks were used by the army, border guards and the Stasi.

I own an EG Mak dated 63 with a "Y" and all the other markings on the frame you noted. From what I can gather, these were training pistols.

I also own another EG dated 64 with an "S" on the frame as well as an X'ed out LSA below the slide release. I've learned that this indicated a police issue pistol.

Of course, I have no way of validating all this data but I do trust all the forum members and the information they provided.

I was understanding that the "S" stood for Stazi, the secret police.
I have one and it seems to be a cut above my other East Deutsch Makarovs, which would tend to support that, considering the Stazi were deemed more important than regular police units or military. Thus, they would get better equipment.

I've followed the Makarov forum for a number of years now and I've never heard that East German Makarovs were "training pistols". The Makarov was the standard sidearm of the Warsaw Pact forces - are you suggesting EG Maks were only used in basic training and soldiers were issued an entirely different pistol in regular Army units?

In no way was I suggesting that EGs were only used for training. Like I said, I have no way of validating the data in the Mak forum. I "read" a poster's comment that that's what the "Y" stood for. Then again, I read another that said the letter was an inspector's stamp. Who really knows?

One thing forum members seemed to agree on was the significance of the X'ed out LSA on the left side of the frame. They were issued to police and whether they're a lot more valuable than those without is debatable.

I'm no expert on Maks but I'm learning. It's difficult to separate the myth from the factual and, in a way, it's what makes collecting them a lot of fun .

As a Socialist Communist country, it's easy to ascertain that the EG Makarov belonged to the collective.

Sorry for the smarta$$ed remark. The Makarov was the pistol for border guards, police, and other Stasi type organizations.
