Alive or dead. Can be a writer, manufacture, dealer or whatever.
I go with Norman Flayderman [best know as the author of antique American guns and their values.]
What a life. In the golden days of gun collecting 50's 60's 70's and beyond he owned a mail order only gun outlet that handled antique American arms-and did so very successfully. As a result he handled thousands of rare guns some well known, others only known by a handful of examples. His range of knowledge ran from colonel flintlocks to 1903 Springfield's

As a result, he became the premier authority on the subject and was called in to appraise such collections as the Colt and Winchester museum's

Not content with being just a author and .gun appraiser, he hunted and fished 6 continents.
I could live that life.

Kobalt tool company was my initial thought. Decently priced product with incredible customer service. The more I think of it though, the more I think of true artists like Michaelangelo who would craft something spectacular.

It is always a fun exercise to imagine guys like Georg Luger, Vasily Degtyaryov, Sergei Simonov, Uziel Gal, Hiram Maxim, John Garand, Dr.Gatling, "carbine" Williams, Eugene Stoner, and so many others could somehow be brought forward and given a chance to cooperate and/or compete in the hotbed free market of today.

Who knows what they could do with today's materials and methods and the freedom to go nuts? :)

Toyota? What am I missing?
Edit:OK I reread the title 5x and think I get the misunderstanding.
It means if you PERSONALLY, could be in someone else's shoes who was/is in the gun business, who would that be?

Yeah I would like to be Amber. Fantastic gun collection, knew all the top writers and had the ear of the manufactures.

Oooohhhh wait. That title is very confusing! :D

So some of us are answering who we would personally like to be.
Some of us are asking who we would like to SEE in or back in the gun business today.

Guess I wouldn't much volunteer to be any 20th century Russian/Soviet designers. :). Not quite the life I might wish for, though who knows what they thought of it.

Huh? I'm still missing what Toyota, Maytag, Ridgid, Kobalt, Timex - etc, have to do with guns.

I thought the OP is asking, if we could live the life of a famous gun-related person (hunter, soldier, owner of a firearms manufacturing company, etc) of the past, who would we pick?

I'd pick Teddy Roosevelt.

Thank you someone got it. I knew what I meant.:)
I like the TR pick. Every time I see a 1903 Springfeild I think of his influence on it.
"No more spike bayonets!"

Yes, Bobson, that is what he's asking but it wasn't perfectly clear from the original thread title, which was, "Who would you like to be in the gun business?"

Read one way it is "who would you like to trade places with, and live their life?"
Read another way it is (was) "who would you like to see in the business of making guns today?" :)

I answered the second question. There's a whole lot to think about in the first one, as you'd have to take the ups and downs of their life, not just the best parts. Some of the great old gun folks had very happy lives and some didn't so much.

Doh. Ok, make my choice Teddy Roosevelt as well. The 2nd most intellectual and 1st most adventurous president we have ever had.

Ah, gotcha. I came a bit late to the party and only saw the most recent title. Didn't realize it had been changed lol.

Yep, TR. :) Short of living some of his experiences, he would have been a terrific guy to hang around with.

Since most of the ones I liked are dead I'll just stay where I am.
Actually, Ned Roberts and Skeeter Skelton lived the kind of lives I always kind of admired. That said, I've been quite lucky to have and to have had some nice guns, a ton of loading experience, worked in firearm sales, and hunted extensively in my home state, and lucky to own my own "deer" camp/small farm. I'll just say thank you to God and the fine family and life He has given.
If it goes bang or twang, I like it.

What's a colonel flintlock?
It'd be Mike Dillon. Only(or one of very few) civilian guy allowed town and fly an armed aircraft.

You understand it.
Another I'd like to be is anyone who worked directly with John Browning. Imagine seeing the mind and hand of JB creating his designs.

I would trade places with.......

Travis Haley because of his skills.

Jerry Miculek because he always looks like he is having fun playing with guns.

Reed Knight Jr. because he's really loaded and he gets to build really cool stuff. Not to mention I grew up in Vero Beach hearing my grandfather and uncles talk about his dad way back before the family ever started dabbling in guns.

Chris Costa because everyone should get to experience sporting a beard like that at least once in there life.

Rich Wyatt because, well, you know...
