I got to shoot my Rem. Model 7 .260 yesterday. Since there isn't a local extended range to shoot at around here, my friend and I went to his grandfather's land to shoot. We stepped off 515 long steps (since I know that the average step is shorter than a yard) and set a 5 gal. bucket out. I popped 3 shots off at it. I took each one at a little different aim. I put 1 hole right in the middle of it. That's the only time I hit it. I think I may have flinched a little the third shot. Anyone else poppin' off some long shots?

Ou range is only 300 yards so that's the farthest I can shoot.
But even 300 is pretty challenging with a service rifle. Or even with a scoped bolt action if the target is small enough.

I've had the chance but have never even taken one 600 yard shot. I have access to a 300 yard range but it's pretty inconvinient to get to. Farthest I can regularly shoot is 200 yards and I'm as confident at that distance as I am at 100 yards.

Wish I could shoot at 600 yards. :(

Our club has a 200, 300 & 600 yd. range about 45 miles from home but the nearest 800,900,1000 yd range is 275 miles away.

NRA rule book specifies targets for following ranges as follows:

200 yd use SR Military "Target, Rifle, Competition, Short Range"
300 yd use SR-3 Same target as above but w/larger aiming black.
500 yd use MR "Target, Rifle, Competition Mid-Range"
600 yd use MR-1 Same as above but with larger aiming black.
800, 900 & 1000 yd use LR target

Not sure I agree w/NRA definition of long range, things start to get pretty interesting @ 600 yds, but 1000 yds is a real learning experience, especially for one who doesn't get the opportunity to do so regularly.;)

DYING TO GO!!

I've been loading up a boatlaod of 308 and 6mm to take to the 500yd range that is 25 miles or so from my house. Last time I managed a 1.5" group at 400 with my 308 off a bipod. Sheer luck I think.
