Who's made or bought the perfect shooting stool for use at the bench?

You did ask about "bought"

A few years back the "chair" at the light board, where I create lighting for plays/events, broke and I bought a medical/lab stool. You'd have thought the heavens had opened up. So much more comfortable than any of the chairs we had used. On some days I would spend 4 hours in the old chair and my back ached. But with the new stool it was fantastic. So I purchased one for my reloading bench.

Since the OPs position is inside and he doesn't have to haul to back and forth to the range this may be ideal.

Just search for medical stool. They come both desk and counter height. It comes with castors but they're easily replaceable with feet (search for "glides"). The picture is before I switch out to the glides.

For shooting benches I just take regular metal folding chairs.
For my reloading bench in the garage I re-purposed my old office chair when we moved.

Is it 100 berm, 200 berm and 300 tree line yards from your position? Hard to tell from a picture.

No ... the big berm is at 100 yards. You can't see my targets at 200, 400, 700 and 1,000 yards.

So far I haven't seen anything that makes me jump up and down with excitement. I'm still thinking of making a stool or swing out seat.

@Walkalong, those photos remind me of a paint chart for green! :D Those musicians chairs look to be near perfect for this sort of thing.

As a drummer, can confirm - drum stools are the correct answer. Only caveat: They are nearly all designed to rotate (like an office chair), so you won't be physically locked into a particular position. Shouldn't be a problem (and actually should be a benefit in most circumstances), but if you feel the need for your seat to be both sturdy and immovable, that rotational freedom might bother you.

I’ve always liked the practicality of our club’s buckboard stools. They’re basic 2 x 12 treated, front and back “legs” (semi-circle cut out to provide 4 points of ground contact) with a stringer in between and a top.

I see most guys park bench style on them but I prefer, and have taught my kids to straddle them. Very stable, easy to use, and adjustable for really short people by adding a sandbag to the seat.

Not great pictures, but hopefully they convey the idea.

Three legged stools are much easier to get to sit stably in less-than-glass-flat surfaces than 4-legged ones.

+1 for the photos of the Dachshunds perched on the drummer stool. :D

@Skylerbone, thanks for the photos. Those look like good shooting stools. I try to avoid working with wood whenever possible so if I made anything similar it would have steel tubing in place of the 2x12 lumber.

^^

That's about as good as it gets.
I cobbled mine together for nothing 'cause I'm cheap.
Take an old secretary's chair, pull the wheels off and replace them with lawn mower valves to give it a steady base. Upholstery, I can take or leave, although I've replaced the seats on some of them with fibreglass stadium seats if I was going to leave it in the open.
Cheap and disposable.

Third pic is Grandma when she was young with her buddy Rudy. Rudy would let her win at tug of war. Fun to watch.

I built this one a long time ago. Height of the seat, as well as how close or far away from the bench is infinitely adjustable. If you look close you can see two (four total) of the large T bolts on the tube over tube sections to lock them solid.

You’d be surprised how some people sit when you tell them to get comfortable though.

That one beats my portable backyard setup, in that, other than two adjustments, it’s ready to go.

At home, sometimes I have to drag out a bunch of other stuff, jump through the hoops, so to speak. The 55 gallon “moderator” has allowed me to play more with unsuppressed things at the house as Mrs.jmorris does not like to be disturbed by them.

I have been working on something I think will be pretty cool though, the shelter part has been done for a year or so, just need more time for less more important things to do...to finish it

I dont have a picture, but I welded one up for a guy out of a heavy acme threaded scaffolding leg that allowed one to spin the seat to the desired elevation. I also built it with 3 legs instead of four to eliminate wobble. Unfortunately it was so nice someone stole it from his range. When I find another scaffold leg ill build another and post pics.

Here's what I use:

It's more out of necessity than some grand research project. I got out to the range one day and realized that I had forgotten the chair that I usually used. This happened to be in the front of the truck in the box so I put it together and used it instead of driving home to get something else. I straddle it similar to how @Skylerbone taught his kids and it's amazingly stable.

ETA:

I have also used a drum throne and it works pretty well as long as it has good feet. If the legs poke through the feet, the skinny legs sink into the ground pretty quickly. I usually don't have the luxury of shooting from concrete. Our kids weren't happy about it when it was time for the throne to be used as it was originally designated and it was locked in my truck. :D

Matt.

@Walkalong, lovely photos of the pups.

Thanks for so many good suggestions. I'm still undecided, and this weekend got away from me with a 400 mile roadtrip to pick up a cement mixer coupled with tearing down a deck on the house and dragging the wood to the dump. I'll be sure to post photos of what I end up making or buying. Now that I have the mixer maybe it'll be made of concrete! :D
