What do you run in your 1911? I remember seeing an article about a Marine special ops using Wilson 47D's but can't seem to find it.

Which model# Wilson's? Are the 8rd mags frowned upon?

Mine. They were made by wilson though.

All seven rounders. The springs in the eight round mags need changed occasionally. Seven round springs last almost forever.

Wilson 47D for my 45
Colt Delta Elite OEM's for my 10/.40S&W (have both caliber mags)
Whatever they gave me STI 5.0 Trojan mags

Tripp Cobra. I replaced all followers and springs in my Wilsons with the Tripp kits. I have 25 or so of the Tripp mags. Even my finicky pistol has perfect performance with Tripps. I'm with the 7 round guys. I had occasional feed or slide stop problems with loading 8 rounds in just about every top name brand. Loading 7 seems to eliminate most problems.

Colt, Springfield, and Metalform with the round follower. All work flawlessly.

Wilson for all my 1911's including my 10mm Delta Elite.

Wilson did offer stainless 8 and 9 round mags for the Colt Delta Elites but discontinued them with the decline in popularity of 10mm. :(
They are hard to find but show up at Gun shows occasionally. I have 3 that I purchased from Wilson Combat back in the mid 1990's.

My 1911 (Springfield Armory) came with Metalforms, and I bought 2 more of the same from them. They work just fine.

Then I bought a few Chip McCormick PowerMags (8 rounders). They are wonderful- every bit as reliable as the Metalforms, and one more round (and a slam pad to boot).

While I'll keep the 7 round Metalforms for range use, for carry and defense, it gets the PowerMags. They are even quite inexpensive if you know where to get them; I bought my 3 off of ebay- a company on there sells them for about $19 or so plus shipping. Worth every penny.

Wilson stainless for both full size and compact.
Had a McCormick welded bottom plate let loose at the range once.

While I still have some Wilson magazines, I no longer buy them. The ones I still use have had their springs replaced with stronger springs (modified to fit the Wilson followers), and this limits them to 7-round capacity ... which is what I prefer, anyway. I've never been satisfied with 1911-type 8-round magazines. They're seemingly more often reported as being connected to feeding & functioning issues. Interestingly enough, the S&W and SIG 8-round magazines seem to provide reliable functioning in their respective pistol designs. Go figure.

I've tried many 1911-type magazines over the years. My favorite from the 70's, for best functioning in my Commander, were Vega magazines. I have no idea whatever became of the company.

Lately, we've had good luck with the Metalform 7-round magazines, using the Colt-type follower, although the magazine springs still need to be replaced on some reasonably frequent basis if a lot of frequent training is being done. The Wolff magazines have seemed to be fine, too.

I haven't had a chance to try the ACT magazines, or a couple of the other new brands, yet.

I've never found a magazine using the folded, single piece, 2 'leaf-type' followers that I liked to use, long term.

Gary P:
Any differences between the Colt and Wilson's, any differences in construction, function, etc......Thanks

whatever happens to be available the fastest when i want more mags... i have colt, sa, metalform, pro mag, wilson, and mecgar mags. all of 'em run fine.

there are certain guns that i am not very specific about which mags i get... guns like the 1911 that have been around for a long time, folks shoulda long since figured out how to put a mag together...

I use a slight variation on Tuner's recipe, specifically Metalform part# 45-273 blued steel 7rd mags, with the flat dimpled follower, and the removable floor plate, standard Metalform springs. They never FTF, never fail to lock the slide on empty, and you can store them loaded forever. I did a group buy for these over on 1911forum, before a couple of the mods decided to ban group buys. How can you beat a doggedly reliable, flush-fitting mag, for $8?
