Why 6.5x55, why not 7-08 or .270?

Fella's;

And I see no reason to cite 6.5 ammo scarcity. You can buy more than one version of it at several retailers in the immediate community & have been able to all through this latest bout of insanity.

I have no issue finding 6.5x55 ammo, I have seen at leased one brand at every halfway respectable gun store in North America, only place that carries ammo that does not have any is Wal-Mart.

On the ammo factor -

To those who have pointed out reloading - yes, I am a reloader, and I actually have a "standard issue" (FL/Collet Neck/Seating/Univ Exp./FCD) set of Lee dies...BUT - before I started using said dies (as they are new purchase from Midway to compliment the rifle), I have been teetering on whether I'm keeping it.

Frankly, my friend with a .30-06 M1 told me I was insane for getting a "hard to find european caliber" and soon "I'll never find ammo". Well, I've been able to shoot consistently for the past year, while he's been dry on ammo, only getting some factory stuff within the past few months.
Also, during this entire craze, I've seen a stack of .264 bullets at my local GS gathering dust and giving me sexy little winks from the shelf. I already have a box of 120gr HotCor's, and just found a box of Hornady 160gr RN bulls.

Also, 1stmarine - the wisdom regarding taking shots outside of your range was a good reminder, as well as the reminder that if one is taking shots past 200-300yds, one should get an actual long range rig, and practice, practice, practice...

On this topic, by the way - I went looking for a stretch beyond 200yds in my area - and the only places that did were an open field, and usually had a house at the other end of that line, or a set of trees with a house not far beyond the woodline, or some other reason I wouldn't want to take the shot in a hunting situation.

Long range, the 6.5's are the bullet to beat these days. .270 Match ammo is about as available as unicorn giggles.

All this talk of velocity indicates that you are missing the point of the 6.5x55. It is no more of a barrel burner than the 30-30 ! On deer and lesser game it is extremely lethal with ye olde lead core jacketed ammo well out to the range at which 99.8% of people can ethically make shots and that most people actually hunt at in venues other than their imagination. While the160 grain RN is not terribly versatile, it is terribly penetrating and will do you well up through elk to at least 150 yards.

Your reference to "hydrostatic shock" and other internet myths suggests you would be much happier with a 300 Win MAG or the latest super duper uber Magnum in any event.

:/ Sierra makes two Matchking bullets in .277 diameter. Yes, they make 5 in .264, but match ammo for either is as close as your nearest reloading bench. Really not that big of a deal - decide which one you want to shoot, and make ammo for it appropriate to the game you want to play or animal you want to shoot.

I'd love the thought of burning out a swede barrel...

Of the three, to me it seems to have less recoil. And, I've owned all three at some point in time.

I made up for selling the one I had, by getting into 6.5s pretty deep. I have 2 .260s, a 6.5 barrel waiting an opportunity to build with, and a 6.5x47 build in the works using a Rem Model Seven.

My next rifle will be in either 6.5x55 or .260 Remington, whichever I can find a nice rifle in either caliber. I reload, so not worried about finding ammo. I can make a bunch of it for practice, or to take on hunts.
