Nah. A bow of some sort. Rapidly reloads, easy transport of ammo, pretty quiet. I personally like the crossbow, but they are a bit harder to reload than some sort of long bow. And compounds have some pretty nice velocities.

Actually I can see it makes sense to trap vermin to control damage to your foodstuffs and livestock (chickens)
And a hood selection of varied types of passive traps might be the best.

I don't see this as ever being possible. If conditions were such that humanity had fired all of the rounds of ammunition that would lead me to believe there would be a tremendous demand for cartridges. Such demand would certainly lead to some sort of large scale manufacturing whether by the military or profit minded individuals.
