Why a "truck gun"?

Whenever I'm forced to lock my pistol in my truck for CCH prohibition reasons I use a lock box and still don't feel right about it. I'm obviously missing something because many smart people choose to keep a gun in their vehicle, so educate me - why?

My thoughts on this are from the SD perspective:

- A handgun in your truck can be stolen easily.
I never leave it in the vehicle very long unattended. Just when I go in somewhere that I can't carry.

- If it's in your truck when you need it you just lost a gunfight.
What if the fight comes to you while seated in your car?Carjacking, etc.

- If you go get it and come back to the gunfight you're going to jail.
It would be with me when I leave the vehicle 99.9% of the time.

- If you need it while driving are you going to dig around under the seat or in the glove box for it?
Nope. Easily accessible while driving

I always have a small 22 rifle and a m94 30-30 in saddle scabards behind the seat when i head out of town. I carry a 40 S&W.

A tactic of thieves breaking in and leaving the purse is that they just take something else and a few credit cards from the purse. In the time that it takes one to figure out that the credit cards are gone, they've already racked up a stash at someone else's expense.
Not in my experience. I've never had dealings with a crook of that intelligence. They were quick and stupid like all the rest.

When I was a kid, I lived with my Grandad on his cattle ranch in Parks County, Wyoming. He had two trucks that had no plates or insurance; they never left the ranch or were driven on regular roads.

I drove a flatbed Ford F-350 everyday. It had a large cystern mounted for hauling water. Our truck gun was a Stevens bolt action 30-30 with accurate and sturdy iron sights. I shot coyotes on sight. Many of those beggars were knocked down for good with this 30-30 rifle.

In the early Fall, many 'lopes and mulies fell to this rifle, too.

Is a 30-30 rifle the BEST truck gun? It sure worked well for me.

There are times when I have to lock my CCW in the car, but I try to avoid it as best I can. Besides it being hardly useful there it can be stolen while you are away. I keep mine in a safe, but I know that a determined thief could find a way to relieve me of it. It's one of those occasional necessary evil things, mainly because of gun-free or common sense-free zones.

A Model 94 lever-action in 30-30 is a great truck gun. Short, quick, and more "politically correct" in some areas as compared to hauling around an AK or AR. I wish I never sold mine. Still have a 94 in .357 though.

To me, my carry gun is the one I carry on my person, and the truck gun is the gun I always keep behind the seat in my truck. Not too long ago I had taken the gun out from behind the seat because I was driving to a state where that could get me in to trouble. I came back and did not put the gun back behind the seat. Sure enough I was with some family when we saw a deer get hit by a train. The deer lost a leg but was still alive and suffering greatly...I did not have my gun to put it out of it's misery. Now that truck gun is again in the truck and will remain there. I dont want to have to deal with something like that again.

truck gun

If I thought I had to shoot a truck, I think I would use my 500s&w handirifle with a one inch piece of 1/2" brass rod over 40 grains of alliant 2400.

I think there two lines of thought here. Some carry a gun in their vehicle for self defence and some carry for what I call shooting things that need to be shot. The latter includes hunting, animal control,.blasting trash into less offensive pieces, impromptue target practice and other activities varying from legal and innocent to nefarious, stupid and criminal. You can use what you please, in my youth I often used a slingshot.
