If it's legal where you live do you carry a long gun in your truck/vehicle? What do you keep onboard and why? It's legal here and I vacillate between a shotgun, a milsurp with red dot and my scoped .22 WMR. There's also a .22LR coup de grace gun in the console. And it's been used more than once. Cannot stand to see anything suffering.

Just curious about other's thinking on the subject.

The cheapest, dirtiest, rustiest, ugliest single shot 22lr or 12 gauge that I can find. Prefer to pay less than $100 for one, that way if it gets lost, stolen, etc. I'm not out anything. A 22 or 12 gauge can handle just about anything I'd need my truck gun for. Having said that, due to a recent increase in the feral dog population, I'm currently accompanied by my trust Marlin 30-30. The truck stays locked and is parked about 20' from my office window. The rifle gets taken inside every night also. For what it's worth, I don't like a red-dot on any of my truck guns; prefer a peep to a scope as well. Just that much less to go wrong/break.

I, like a lot of others did the window rack in my pickup for a long time. Don't recommend it anymore. But there is plenty of room behind the seat of most trucks. Even my crew cab has plenty of space for a long gun behind the back seat.

But as a general rule no. If I'm in any of my vehicles there is a handgun either on me, or in the console that gets brought in the house when I get home. I have kept a long gun behind the seat at times and would do so again if I felt the need. It has varied depending on the perceived need. But a Ruger 10/22, a pump shotgun, an AR, or one of my inexpensive 308 bolt guns has ridden there in the past.

Mostly when traveling. An unloaded, cased long gun stored where inaccessible is legal in most places. Especially shotguns or a 22 with 10 round or less mags. AR's not everywhere.

I'm in an extended domain state, we can carry a firearm anywhere in the vehicle/personally owned mode of transportation concealed or open. My truck gun is in a spot that is easily accessible but hidden from prying eyes.

This seems to be the local favorite for keeping a long gun in the truck. Given the difficulty in dropping the seat back in many crew cab pickups, it's not intended for quick access - just a 'get me home' kinda option.

My Grandfather always kept a .22 behind the seat of his truck, loaded in a case. Dispatched a number of critters while I was around, stopped suffering of other animals as well.

Always there but to access it everyone in the seat had to exit the truck so the seat could be folded forward.

By then lots of animals know something is up and leave only to come back later and cause trouble. This setup was my solution.

It also isn’t conspicuous from outside the vehicle.

This is why I bought a hi point 9mm carbine. Cheap accurate enough. And want cry if it’s destroyed in a wreck. Also run a bike cable through it to slow down thief’s.

There are ways to convert them to quick release, at least on Ford. I assume there is a way to do it with others. You could buy something like this, or do like I did and rig up something.

Amazon.com: Sporthfish Rear Seat Release Kit Strap Compatible for Ford SuperCrew F-150 (2009-2018),SuperCab F-150 (2015-2018) F-150 Raptor (2017-2018) F-250/F-350 (2017-2018) (Red) : Automotive

Each of my vehicles (a jeep and a F150) have a H&R partner pump HD shotgun, which is a clone of the Rem 870 (more or less). They were sold at wally world for about $140 a few years back.

A person would have to know where to look for a quick grab of either of my truck guns. Break in down by the river with the rest of the night to look would not get anything because they would be with me.

In the past I have carried an M-1 folding carbine, an SKS folder or a pistolized 12 ga. pump.
I might carry a long gun now, depending on the circumstances.
I find that deploying a long gun from within a vehicle is contraindicated... .[/QUOTE]
That depends on how much of a hurry one is in and how/where the gun is stored.

I don’t leave them in my vehicle if I will be leaving my vehicle for awhile but my “truck gun” (I usually just call them “my gun”) will have high utility value as a hunting/varmint rifle as well as a PDW. An SBR of some sort would probably be ideal but I use a 16” AR with traditional fixed carry handle and FSB. I keep a carry handle scope and mount handy and it has proven to be reliably accurate even when removed and reattached.

Legal but no. My coworker has a distant history and is therefore a prohibited person and he sometimes drives my vehicles. I carry on the body. He will likely get his rights restored at some point, maybe, if he wants to spend the money, and if that happens then the work trucks will each have an 18” barrel 12ga with a youth stock loaded with buck and a side saddle of bird shot.

Bird shot not for defensive purposes, but hunting purposes. We travel through some very rough ground and it’s not unheard of for cars to run off the road and not be found for a couple days. White 1ton trucks with cargo boxes probably would stand out, but why not be prepared to get food if we needed to. And bird shot can still be used if needed but it’s much less effective unless it’s within a few yards.

Truck service is hard on guns, and theft seems to be on the rise. I would hate to arm some clown that would pillage my truck for drive-through change, so I try not to leave guns in the truck.
The thieves in your area must be more dedicated than those around here. Couple years ago, someone ransacked a few cars in the lot at the shop. Cupholders and ashtrays full of change were ignored and a crossbow with bolts and broad heads was left in its place. Even a little Craftsman toolbox full of tools wasn't taken.

Still wouldn't want to tempt them with a firearm though, but it's not legal to transport loaded long guns here anyway.

My truck gun is an SKS behind the seat. Its always in the truck and is always loaded. At night the truck is in the garage or behind the 6 foot privacy fenced back yard which has an alarm.

When I first got my AR9 pistol I thought it would be not only great as a fun/cheaper practice alternative to my 15, but also a great gun to keep in the car. After all, it is a "pistol" and I have a CHP.

After watching the "mostly peaceful but firey protests" the last couple years, I've concluded theres not a practical way to stow the gun in my sedan.

On top of that the unconstitutional ATF's constantly changing opinion on what is legal in regards to these particular firearms makes even having one that much more perilous.

So I make due with my sidearm and three 15rd mags.

I've never had a gun rack in the rear window (if I'd had a truck in high school I would have), but I do have a truck gun stashed behind the seat out of sight. It's a Spanish FR8 carbine in .308. In other words a short-barreled Mauser rifle. Bought it for that purpose back in the early nineties when they first started coming into the country. Wouldn't care to use it for small-game hunting, but for most any other purpose it'll get the job done.

Just at the moment though it's not in my truck because I need to rework my behind the seat set up. Once I have I'll put it back.
