Truck Guns

What? I missed the memo that it was time for our annual truck gun thread? Unfortunately, I suspect that for most of us, keeping a long gun in our vehicles is no longer a reasonable option.

Before I retired, I would throw my patrol carbine (6920 with an EOTTech, later an Aimpoint PRO) in a soft case with three loaded P-mags in the pockets, basically for going back and forth to work. It is NOT legal for citizens to carry loaded long guns in motor vehicles in my state. Unless I'm going somewhere where I'm going to be using and/or carrying a rifle, I do not keep a long gun in the vehicle anymore.

As noted, firearm thefts from vehicles are a major source of the stolen gun market in many areas Even our stupidest tweakers up here target cars, trucks and SUVs that look likely to have a firearm inside (trailheads up here are horrible for vehicle break-ins).

It's just not the same now as it was back in the day when many of us kept a loaded lever-action .30-30 in the truck while working on the property, farm, ranch...

Nope. I figure if I'm in a vehicle and my ccw isn't good enough to get the job done I'll just drive away. Even with training I would much rather leave a situation that could become a potential shootout than stay and get involved. Especially without somebody else there to watch my back.

The odds of me being in a situation where I need something more than a pistol AND have enough time to dig out a rifle/shotgun for use, load it and shoot back AND also can't drive away are virtually 0.

Furthermore I've had my car broken into before and the last thing I want is them stealing a rifle or shotgun out of it.

I see very few reasons to have a long gun in my vehicle. Even though it is legal for me to do so in my state. When the "mostly peaceful" protests were going on last year, I did put an AR or shotgun into the trunk on long trips. The trunk is accessible through the backseat so they could be retrieved without exiting, if needed.

If it's legal where you live do you carry a long gun in your truck/vehicle? What do you keep onboard and why? It's legal here and I vacillate between a shotgun, a milsurp with red dot and my scoped .22 WMR. There's also a .22LR coup de grace gun in the console. And it's been used more than once. Cannot stand to see anything suffering.

Just curious about other's thinking on the subject.
I keep a Marlin 30-30 handy especially when traveling more so for putting down an animal if we hit one than any bad guy’s

Well excuse me!

A person would have to know where to look for a quick grab of either of my truck guns. Break in down by the river with the rest of the night to look would not get anything because they would be with me.

You do know theives find hiding places for a living don't you?
