Why are Glock 9mm extractors so loose?

I first noticed this because I have a conversion barrel for my G27. I went and bought the 9mm extractor, having read that it worked better.

Well, I can't say I had any problems with either extractor. But the gap on the 9mm extractor is huge. I thought maybe it was because the extractor slots were cut differently. But then I looked at the extractor on my G19, and it's also grabbing a heck of a lot of air, rather than cartridge rim. It appears there's enough room between the extractor claw and the breech face to fit 2x 9mm luger rims.

I think this explains why Glock brass often has erratic ejection trajectories. I also suspect this is one of the reasons a Glock can run so many rounds between cleanings. I guess if it works, then so what? But whoa that gap is huge!
