I see them advertised for over $600 used, and I'm curious as to why they go for so much.

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Thanks.

Your paying for supply and demand, they are being imported, and your paying for the name. They are good guns though so the price is worth it to some.

Weapons are a little pricey

Where they really stick it to you is parts, mags, etc.

They really don't care all that much about the civillian market.

As long as people will pay....they will keep the prices high

If they are so great, why do I always see more used ones than new ones at gun shows? They also seem very big and blocky for their calibers, and the prices on extra mags are a gounge. I like the models with the three-way safety that does cocked and locked or decocks, but other guns from Beretta and Taurus also have this feature.

Never seemed worth the money to me, especially for a plastic gun, at this price point I start looking at rifles.

Along with the previously mentioned reason there are several others. Exchange rates, the guns are made in Germany and the value of the dollar against the Euro and tarriffs come in play. The socialistic nature of Germany, yes, even after reunification makes the cost of making anything over there very expensive. Worse than here due to the ridiculous way labor unions and the government do things there....and here for that matter... Anyways the expense of building things there has gotten ridiculous and that is why Mercedes Benz is now making certain models in Alabama and BMW has a plant in Spartanburg South Carolina. The Germans like the US has priced itself out of the world market......much to the benefit of China.....who isl taking those profits and using them to build up their military so they can make war on us after they invade Taiwan sometime in the next few years. However nobody wants to pay attention to the fact this is happening....However getting back on topic the US SOCOM will use HK mark 23 .45acp pistols on them in that coming conflict. Possibly the XM8 rifle too.

+1 Gopguy.

Also my brother in law is with a SWAT team. They use them. He also bought one as a carry piece. Don't have one but they are quality.

They are wonderful pistols. I have a number of HK pistols in my collection. P9S in both .45acp and 9mm. P7M8, VP70Z, USP in .40 and .45acp, Mark 23, Tactical, USP compact, USP Match, USP Expert......and paid through the nose for all of them. The only .45acp in the USP series I don't have is the Elite......and that is only a matter of time and patience. I have not seen one at a show yet...

".40 10rnd mags for $10 a pop from CDNN"

10 round mags should be free:D

HK's...with the exception of the P7 and PSP tend to be bulky and have a somewhat higher bore axis than I like

I am not thrilled with the ergonomics either

But they are built tough and reliable

I hear good things about the new HK45 and may own one if they turn out to be as nice as reported (and available to the public)

I find them boxy and a bit soulless...having said that, my carry is an HK but the only one I have any use for...the P7M8...slim, fast, accurate and built like a cross between a swiss watch and an A1 Abrams....if I were looking at something in a modern double stack double action 9...I would prefer a SIG226over the USPs...

It's a case of paying for quality. Both SIG and H&K are very pricey, buth they are the highest quality handguns on the market today.

They are ridiculously expensive! I don't buy the quality argument - my Ruger KP89T cost me half that, yet it is one of the best and most reliable 9mm and I have been perfectly happy with its performance.

Gopguy's comments sound right to me. I'd add that putting the price too high just reduces their volume. How many more of us would have also bought an HK if it were in the 300+ range instead? That's money HK diverts to its competitors. Lunacy.

Well at one of my last trips to the range, I was shooting the heck out of my HK USP compact 9. I jokingly told the guy in the next booth my HK was the king of plastic guns.
He shook his head and said "Let me show you why my Taurus is great!"

He then proceeded to hit the metal post next to the target at 20 feet on his first shot, and on his 2nd, his Taurus failed to fire. My HK has never had a failure.

I've never had a Ruger semi. I know their 10/22s and the gp100s are rock solid.

There is a common misconception that they are overpriced. They aren't. Lets compare it to the Sig. I used Buds Gun Shop to search for price. And you have to compare apples to apples, so I'll compare the HK USP40 Compact and the Sig 229. The HK cost $673.68, whereas the Sig cost $651.43. For a grand difference of $22.25.

Resale value is high because it's a great gun. These guns will last forever. I don't know what the Sig resale value is, but I'd imagine they keep their value as well.

Depending on the model and where you shop I have seen them for less than Sigs. I paid $38.00 for spare mags for my .45 Compact. The 8 round extended mags for my Sig 245 cost e $60.00 a piece from Sig. I forget what the 6 rounders cost but they weren't cheap. Yes they are expensive. But they also always work and my .45 Compact is as accurate as any gun I own including some 1911's made for target shooting. And
the damn things are built like tanks. If you think they are so expensive look at what some of the semi-custom 1911's are going for. Yes they are polymer. But they are steel reinforced polymer. No rust, light weight, will last virtually forever. I'm not knocking Sigs BTW. I have 5 and they are excellent guns. Among the best made. I guess that's why the Dept. of Homeland Defense split the contract between Sig and H&K. Also their are strong rumors that the .45 H&K Compact might be our next service pistol. If so I think it will become as famous as the 1911 which inspired it. Think of it as a 1911 for the 21st century.

Why are Mercedes Benz automobiles so expensive?
It's just a car,,,right?

I ws gonna say that. :p

Don't get me wrong, I love all my Rugers (SA's and 10/22's) but comparing a Ruger P-series to an HK is kinda like comparing a Escosrt to a Porsche. Bothget you from point A to point B but one is much nicer to drive and is backed with much higher engineering standards.

Well, one way to look at it, aside from adding night sights, is the USP is ready to go out of the box. No tuning! No nothing! The gun goes bang! The gun is balls on accurate. So many people buy 1911's, and then the tweaking begins! Most will never quit tweaking. I will pay for out of the box ready to go any day of the week!

Yup that is why I bought a Norinco 1911, .45acp. Pull trigger gun goes bang, bullet hits where sights were aiming. $325 Cdn. NIB out the door (+ 14% tax). JMB design. Life is good. $550. gets you a used Browning HIPower which does the same thing. Both are made from good old fashion steel.

To me the Sig and HK both sit high in the hand. If neither the HiPower or 1911 suits your fancy why not a CZ 85. You guys can probably buy two CZ's for the price of an HK - sort of a he and a she.

Is there something here I am missing.

[There is a common misconception that they are overpriced. They aren't. Lets compare it to the Sig. /B]
Er the HKs are half plastic, where as the sig is metal(rusty metal lol). I really don't understand why the HKs are so expensive. I was lead to believe most guns are going poly now becasue they are stronger and cheaper then metal.

Good shooting buddy of mine has HK compact. An XD cost $420.00 and goes bang every time. But so what. The way I see it if a guy can afford to buy what he wants, more power to him. Me? I can too, I bought the XD anyway. I don't why, but I did. I think it was the feel, trigger, ease and accuracy but I don't remember, I think the difference in price bought me 3/4 of Rem 870. Maybe that was why?
