Why are Mini-14s (and Mini-30s) relatively inaccurate?

The way I see it, it is not that the Mini-14 is an inherently inaccurate gun. It's that today's gun consumer's standard of quality has elevated. When production was started, there were not many choices in the semi-auto magazine fed segment. It satisfied a niche for an inexpensive, American made gun in the segment. The problem is that we can be guity of judging the past by the present standards. Today's out of the box moa and sub-moa rifles perform similarly to guns in years past where the owner had a lot of dollars tied up in gunsmith work to gain that accuracy.

Could you really blame Ruger for retooling? They did it because the had to. Ruger had to to have suspected an explosion of AR pattern rifles hitting the market as the AWB was nearing a close. They knew that the Mini-14 would have to compete head to head with the AR once the ban was over. If today's Mini-14's shoot 1.5"-2" groups on average, that's about a baseline consumer expectation of a similarly priced AR.
