Everyone's heard about how Ruger shut down for over a year to completely rework the Mini-14. Supposedly the new 580 series models are much more accurate and much more reliable.

So why is it that I see beat up 180 series Mini-14 selling (and people buying) for MORE than 580s series Mini-14s on gunbroker, auctionarms, etc?

Are there actually people out there collecting mini-14s??

Somebody might be accumulating the 180 series (first version of the Mini). I don't see why, but it's possible. 181 to current, probably not.

Mini 185 series vs. 580 series

Probably because the 180 series are 1/2 of what you pay for a 580 series. Yeah, they're not accurate. Yeah, they heat up easily. But if I'm 50feet away, I can still hit something with it. And even if I can't hit it after the first shot, I can throw it that far. :D
The newer Rugers are priced so much higher than what an average guy can afford anymore, that a cheap Olympic AR is a better buy now. I just want a cheap truck gun. And the cheaper, earlier Mini's are still good for that.

JMHO

The one I had sure couldn't hit anything at 50 yards....maybe I should have tried throwing it......:cuss:

The new Target Mini-14s are sure the best looking Minis I've ever seen, if they shoot I might even give one another try.

No, you guys don't understand what I meant -

The old 185 series rugers are selling for JUST AS MUCH if not MORE than the new 580 series.

For example, here's a 185 Series GB Ruger Mini-14 for $1,495.00
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=68707584

And another old Mini-14 blued steel for $499
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=68262494

Whereas on the same website a 580 series Mini-14 for 550
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=68698883

Wierd, huh?

Even counting for SS and GB model (only difference i can see is flash hider and bayo) the prices are still screwy..and apparently people are paying them.

The GB is a cop gun, not your ordinary run of the mill Walmart Mini. You'll note that there are no bidders at that price.

Around here, the new Mini14 goes for around six and used ones go for around four and a half.
