Why aren't you a cowboy action shooter?

I gave up playing cowboys and Indians nearly 60 years ago, I've lived around real cowboys enough to know that CAS is make believe and let's pretend. It's too expensive to boot. Shooting low powered loads doesn't help either.

Black powder cartridge rifle shooting looks interesting, but is way too expensive for me.

Just wondering do you think Jerry M shoots full house loads when he's trying ta set a speed record?

I just had a funny vision of Jerry M. reaching for his moon clip and trying to dump it into a SAA.

His .45 loads make major power factor. Good enough for me.

I just wonder how many of the people complaining about the CAS rules not fitting their style, have ever shot any type of competition?

I haven't shot that many, but all of the ones that I have tried:

1. Were great fun.
2. Contained a large number of good people who were willing to help.
3. Contained a small number of aloof snobs.

Although I admire and try to follow a John Wayne code of ethics ... I was pretty much done with cowboy guns when I was about 10 ... but I do keep a lever gun and six -shooter around just in case I get the itch.

Why don't I shoot SASS?

1. I am a grown man, playing dress up seems a little odd, especially when there are 458 guys named Doc Holliday standing around.

2. They all seem to shoot 38 special loaded too weak for bullseye at targets 7 yards away, it seems kind of lame.

3. I went to a range that had an SASS match going on while there was a high power rifle match on the other range. They were riding a barrel pony and shooting at targets while two guys tugged on ropes to rock it back and fourth. It looked a little odd.

I'm trying to guesstimate how cheaply you could possibly do this.
pistols; $300 for two pietta colt black powder pistols from cabelas.

used Rifle; $500 more or less

used Shotgun; same as rifle.

Total

$1300 A lot of new shotguns and rifles cost more than that.

Also you can shoot whatever loads you want.

Between three position smallbore rifle, service rifle, long-range rifle, and NRA conventional pistol, I've got over ten years of competition experience.

I have no "complaints", and haven't asked anybody in cowboy action shooting to change ANYTHING.

The OP asked "Why aren't you a cowboy action shooter?" I stated my reason why.

The overall cost is a killer and in all honesty,I'm so uncorinated that you'd most likely die of old age before I finished an event.

well I don't play for a few reasons;

Money, haven't had the money to fuel it and the other aspects of shooting I love to do.

Equipment. I don't have an acceptable shotgun or rifle to use yet. (unless a Baikal over under, and 450 Marlin lever action are acceptable) don't have enough cowboy gear either.

Companionship. I don't know any one who will actually go to an event with me. Most I know don't have any interest in it, And the only people who do is a lazy cousin who has no job, or money and can't wake up before noon on any given day, and the other has a felony record, so he is out too. I don't particularly like going to new places and events alone relying solely on the hospitality of the group to make new friends and not be a loner.

Time. The days I get off seem to be at the mercy of my clients. Planning anything ahead of time is next to impossible.

The sport does seem intriguing to me. The dress up thing doesn't bother me. and I actually would like to try it, but its just not in the cards at the moment.

I bought a SAA clone and a nice holster rig just for CAS/SASS shooting. I became discouraged when I found out I needed 1 more pistol, and at least a SXS shotgun, and clothing to compete. I am 38, and dressing up or following rules doesn't bother me. Riding a barrel pony doesn't bother me, I don't care how I look.

The reason I don't participate is the cost of the required equipment. I have other hobbies and just can't afford to go two grand into a new hobby that I may or may not stick with. If they had more 1 gun competitions and only required boots and a hat (with jeans and some kind of button up shirt or something) I would probably try it.

I have since traded off the six shooter but still have the holster rig. I have since lost interest but I still love SAA pistols.

I'm still working on getting all the equipment together but all I've got at this point is the shotgun. I'm looking for a nice pair of Ruger vaquero's and a good rifle.

Your best bet is to keep an eye on the SASS Wire Classifieds. There's ALWAYS folks there selling old equipment to buy different stuff; guns, leather, clothing, etc.

I think its a bit silly to dress up in a costume to shoot guns, for adults anyway. (No offense to historical re-enactors.)

As I've stated, CAS isn't really my bag, but there does seem to be an odd state of mind held by some people here.

Costumes + Fake guns = Re-enactor, which is completely ok.
Real guns + no costume = regular shooter/competitor, which is completely ok.
Costumes + Real guns = ZOMG stupid!

Too much money and too much LARPing without the nerdy girls in fur :) . Oh, and never was big into cowboys and Indians.

I love shooting. I love kicking back with my old college friends and getting hammered on screwdrivers and wine in botas while playing D&D.

I can't combine the two (role-playing and live-action competition) without alcohol, which I refuse to do when firearms are involved.

It's a throwback to the (mostly) 50s and 60s movies and TV. Those of us who grew up in that era remember it with fondness, and a shooting game that lets us bring back those days, only with real guns and cooler equipment, is bound to be fun.

Action movies back then were either about WWII or cowboys and indians, and since we didn't have video games and there really wasn't much on TV, we spent a lot of time outside playing Army or cowboys and indians.

I never did get into CAS, but I considered it for a while. The only thing that turned me off was the pipsqueak loads I'd see on TV. Since you guys are saying that isn't the norm, I'll forget about that.

My friend who shot CAS shot the blackpowder division. That looked like great fun, except he had to clean at least four guns as soon as he got home.

Id do it if was one pistol as I think that's more authentic for the majority plus that's acouple hundred in ammo. Also mounted action shooting interests me

FWIW - those are the same people that do competitive dance. Which is one of my reasons, I can only afford one expensive hobby at a time. That goes for time and money. And as much as I love shooting the idea of a 4 star hotel with lots of beautiful women to dance with round the clock beats the range any day. :D

Hey I am new here but thought I would answer the question anyway:

All of my extra resources are being devoted to competing in F/TR Class rifle and I am hoping to combine that with some IDPA competitions soon. That being said, I could totally see giving it a go at some point. I am only 39, and hopefully have a lot of rounds left to be fired. But for the forseeable future it is all about trying to shoot 5 inch groups at 1k.

Kevin

Try it !!!

Instead of thinking up reasons not to try it , come on out and try it ...

Folks are more than happy to leand guns and rigs to newcomers ,,,,, If you borrow one of mine I supply the ammo as well ....

We are as friendly a bunch as you could ever hope to meet ...

Jabez Cowboy :)

I don't think you'll find a worthwhile rifle for $500, used or not. Shotgun, ok. Black Powder pistols need the accessories.

You still need leather: holsters, belts and shell holders.

And you haven't bought your costume yet.

Even going cheap, it's going to be $2000

Brand new Rossi Puma 92 $480 (New)

Ruger Blackhawk $300-$400

Stevens 311 $225-$300
I found these firearms and prices on an internet auction site, took about 10 minuetw.

You still need leather: holsters, belts and shell holders.

2 holsters @ $32 = $64 Belt $25 Belt slide for shotgun shells $25 (Oklahoma leather products)

And you haven't bought your costume yet.

I would think that everyone has at least one set of jeans, a long sleeve button up shirt, and leather shoes. (if you had read earlier posts you would know that neither a "cowboy hat" or "cowboy boots" are required.)

Even going cheap, it's going to be $2000
Looks like you can be totally outfitted for less than $2000, and if you shop around you could probably beat these prices.

IIRC, single action pistols with adjustable sights (i.e. Blackhawks, Redhawks, etc) are out. Is this not true?
