Why did the U.S. Military give up on the M-14 so quickly?

"In the wake of 9/11 and America's entry into the Global War On Terrorism (G-WOT), most of the remaining 40,000 M14 rifles in the U.S. military's inventory (mostly the U.S. Navy) have been taken out of storage in order to be re-built as precision semi-automatic rifles for sniping use. Many of these rifles that weren't destroyed during the Clinton Era were given to "friendly" countries and there has also begun a move to "buy" some of them back."

Jeremy2171,

You may want to recheck your "access" sources.

Yup, the "SOF" mag has better info than me. I can tell you how many rounds of 5.56 M856 Tracer are currently in Iraq or Afghanistan by LOT# and location if you want. My number still stands.....~100k M14s in inventory...(source .gov "not" SOF)

I like the part of the article where it says "most of the 40k have been taken out of storage to be rebuilt into sniper rifles......" umm, yeah right. That would mean on average there be one "sniper" 1 out of every 4 troops in Iraq.

I personally saw photos of M14 receivers sent to George Gardner at GAP to be made by him into DMR type rifles for the gov't. The Navy is where the remaining inventory of M14's are.

Why did the military swithch from the M14/308 to M16/223? Robert McNamarra and LB Johnson. It was THEIR war fighting plan, not the militaries plans that prompted the change. Anyone want to nominate either of them for Genius of the Year awards? Do I see a hand, any where? No? Ah, well...

Those two cost us TWO wars, one in Viet Nam and one here in the "War on Poverty". Poverty won because they proved you can't give people who won't work enough money to satisfy them but you can give away enough to entice others not to work. Liberals still haven't learned how to fight either of those "wars".
