The M16A3 and M16A4 have the 3 round burst changed to full auto and one of them is a flat top right?

If I remember correctly, the A3 is just the A2 but with full auto though it might have been a flattop as well. Some of the Seabees that I was around had them but I never had much chance to do much more than give them a cursory look over.

The A4 is a flattop and with the 3 round burst.

This is just IMHO but I'm not sure how useful a three round burst is in Assault Rifles other then maybe Police and Counter-Terrorist units. Machine Pistols and Full Power Battle Rifle? Could be far more useful since they would give those weapons more control-ability then going full auto.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't a much lower ROF full auto for assault rifles be better?

I also was fortunate enough to qualify expert with an M-14. I recall the butt plate on some or all, don't remember, folded out to make it more controllable in full auto.

I shot M-1's in my reserve unit, it was all we had. Also owned an M-4 clone. Given a choice, I'd prefer the M-14.

I would have to agree that burst is less useful than full auto for someone with proper experience and training but considering the lack of training that most non combat arms troops get with their weapons burst does, at least in theory, make sense in a standard issue weapon.

Blank adapter. The rifle won't function in semi or full automatic with blank rounds without it. Dirties the heck out of the rifle. In M-60's it's a nightmare.
It was a totally facetious question. But thanks anyway.

The first centerfire rifle I ever shot was an M1Garand. I was 9-10 and I had to dust myself off. My dad and his friends got a laugh out of that. I’ve trained my young men better.

So, if the question is, right now, modern powders/bullets. I don’t see how the Garand beats the M1A. Nostalgia is powerful, I’m down with that. But let’s just talk about fighting...

if the battle is in town I don’t see how the M16/M4 loses. Bad guy behind a brick/concrete wall, yeah, IDK. But my money would be on which gun could I snipe him with when he poked his head up. That would be my AR 15. Or, my AR 10...

And, of course, part of such considerations are flawed.
If you were issues one of these, there would be from 5 to 11 other people similarly armed. And with access to immediate support weapons--at either Squad or Platoon level, and certainly no further than Company.

Which, in our modern times, will be 7.62nato MG fires, 60mm mortar fires, or, at least 40mm grenade fires, as you generally have a grenadier embedded in your Squad.

Correct. At the time, the Automatic Riflemen in the squad were supposed to get the A3, through I never actually saw one in person, we were told they were coming.

The A4 also had a railed handguard.

During my enlistment I was issued an M16A2, then an M16A4, then after CQB school an M4, then as a DM an M39 EMR (heavily modified M14) and then finally a Mk12 SPR. While they all worked well for the tasks I used them for and the M39 was the most accurate, especially beyond 500 yards, I currently own civilian versions of the M4 and Mk12 and don't see a need to add the other for any reason other than nostalgia.
I'm old 66/69 and mine was an XM16E1, gold buffer, three prong flash suppressor.

The AR15 needs quality mags and M4 feed ramps to eliminate the most common hiccups.
Either the M14 is less susceptible to stoppages from weak mags OR less weak M14 mags abound, but I have seen the AR to be more prone to early stoppages when weak or low quality mag meets "rifle" feedramps.
You can find a video online of an ISIS or Daesh fighter with go pro and US supplied full-on M16 taking on the Kurds and eventually getting gunned down. Said fighter is constantly shoving the bolt forward on the M16 to make sure it is GTG through the firefight... out of hard learned necessity I suspect. In the end he is racking the standard charging handle with the only working hand he has left and holding the rifle with his feet.
