In a nutshell, the anti gun movement is rooted in wanting everyone unable to take care of themselves. They want everyone to have to look to the government for everything. They want that power over you and me. Someone that has a gun can protect themselves, feed themselves, etc. In other words they know that a gun is a great tool for establishing self reliance and independence. That scares the hell out of them. The whole "It's for the children" BS is about preying on the emotions of the weak to get them to allow or help perpetuate something that isn't really in their own best interest. It's the feel good mentality. Well if we ban all the guns then no one will ever get shot again, it feels so good. It's completely impossible, irrational, and moronic, but it feels good. So the weak minded buy it. And don't confuse intelligence with strength, there are many geniuses who are very weak minded. These people can be manipulated to support any thing they want them to as long as they can word or frame it so that it feels good. It's the reason that a woman is allowed to sit at home and do nothing except keep having kids and they give her more and more money as she cranks out another puppy. This woman is completely and totally Dependant on the government, just like they want her. But it feels so good to give her money. We are helping her. Helping her what exactly? We are helping keep her under the government thumb. Keeping her voting for the people that keep the freebies and handouts coming her way.
We are in a zero-responsibility, always someone else to blame, everyone's a victim, society. They don't ask people to do what makes sense, but what feels good. When something doesn't feel good but they want to push it on us they create a euphemism. Shell Shock felt bad, so Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was invented and felt better. The condition didn't change just the name and the feelings the names invoked and hence how we deal with it. It's why GIs coming home from WWII got the help they needed and GIs coming back from Vietnam didn't. It's the reason we give high school kids condoms instead of telling them not to be stupid. It feels so much better to let them do what ever the hell they want to do and hope the condoms keep them alive. It's why parents say stupid things like "I'm my Johnny's best friend" when Johnny needs a parent and not another friend.
Most anti gun people have bought into the misguided line of thought that is being pushed on them by a small few. That small few know exactly what they are saying and doing is wrong. But they desire the power I described above. So they manipulate the masses via the schools and the media. They are dumbing down the education system for a specific reason, it produces less educated people. Less educated people tend to react emotionally rather than acting rationally and logically. Emotional reactions make it easier to push the feel good mentality.
A gun is 180 degrees opposed to the feel good mentality. A person owning a gun means that there are bad people out there and I must protect myself from them as no one else can. That doesn't feel good. The fact that people need to carry because there are people that will kill them just because they are there or want their shoes doesn't feel good. And they want what feels good. The antis want you to believe that if it wasn't for the gun that crimes that are committed with guns would have never happened. If we ban the guns all these crimes that are committed with guns will stop happening. That feels good. It's fiction, but it feels good. The antis want you to believe that 911 is a silver bullet for crime. That if you call 911 you will be fine because the police will always come protect you and arrest the bad guy. That feels good. It's fiction, but it feels good.
In the end it all comes down to power. If you cannot protect yourself, or feed yourself you cannot have any level of independence. If you are dependent on someone else for something they have the power to control you by virtue of holding that need over your head. Food, clothing, shelter, protection, it can all be used to control you if you are rendered unable to provide it for yourself.
How many people now a days could go through a long term disaster and survive completely on their own mettle? How many people in New Orleans died because they were so dependent on someone else(government) that they didn't know how to get themselves to safety? Or didn't know that they should try to save themselves.
