Why Does Ruger SP101 .22 get a Bad Rap?

Again- no law requires the SP .22 be fired DA, and quite frankly I can't see why anybody'd want to insist on doing it. :)

I have an early SP101 3" in .38 Special (first year of manufacture, to be exact). I do not have a SP in .22 LR. Both the DA and SA trigger pulls were absolutely utrocious and heavy.

I bought a Wolff spring kit for it, and when disassembling it I knocked off any sharp edges on the internals (and there were quite a few), installed the lighter springs, reassembled it, and it was a completely different pistol, much to my satisfaction. I also installed a Hogue Monogrip because the factory grip was too small for my long fingers. Be apprised that the Ruger is in no way internally finished to the same quality as the earlier S&W pistols, but the SP101 is definitely easy enough to slick up for a kitchen table gun hack with judicious use of a small set of needle files and some fine sandpaper.

I like the SP101 because it is a muzzle heavy gun and points very easily to acquire the front sight.

Here is a fair tutorial:

Depending upon the manufacture date of your SP101 .22:

Good luck in your endeavors!
