Why does THR not have a section devoted to bullet casting? Should it?

Should THR add a separate section for bullet casting?

To me reloading and actually casting your own bullets use different sets of skills. I believe it would benefit the community to open up a section for it? What do you think THR?

I have to agree, I have recently started thinking about casting bullets and don't want to join another forum...because of laziness mostly :D

All kidding aside I have found the community in this forum incredibly supportive in all my efforts to increase my knowledge base, even if all of us do not agree, most are respectful enough to offer a logical argument to broaden both parties perspective on the issue.

I frequent castboolits.com as well as this forum. Lots of good folk on there. And a virtual infinite wealth of info from simple lead ball casting to guys who machine their own custom molds on CNC machines. They pretty much showed me the ropes when I got my first .490 ball mold for my flintlock several years back and now I cast my own bullets for pretty much every handgun caliber I shoot. They gave me advice on casting, fluxing, alloying, sizing, loading and any other topic related to casting you can think of.

I would love to see a casting section on THR also but castboolits.com is hard to beat as far as casting goes, but general firearm talk and info THR takes the cake.

There is already a site dedicated to just cast bullets. That site is well over a decade ahead if one was started here. You're already on the Internet so just go visit CastBoolits.

I voted yes, but I think it should be much broader than just casting bullets. Maybe a Lead sub-forum. I know Cast Boolits is the beez kneez when it comes to Pb but it's over there and I am here.

Why bother?
Well I would say that any expansion of interest in shooting hobbies has the power to reap benefits from the aggregation of knowledge. It just seems like we could use discourse on this topic. I mean their is a forum just for knives (not intending to affect anyone who frequents the knife forums) Why not cast bullets? It would take a while to get a vibrant community, however, I imagine their are quite a few people in the same situation as icebones. Adding a new subsection would be an easy way to get more of the community talking. Even if it takes several years to really get the frequent user with a broad knowledge base, I am only 30 so hopefully I have at least 30 more years to expand my knowledge of firearms. I don't know with the knowledgeable forum members at this site I do not see how it could not add value to the community. Hope this rambling answer helps!

This is The High Road, meaning things are ran differently here, it is why I usually open THR first. I would like a casting sub forum here, simply because I don't care for the atmosphere of many other places.

Reloading/Handloading is definitely different from casting boolits !!

An aspect of our shooting sport that deserves it`s own subforum !

Caster since `83

My two most-visited websites are THR and Cast Boolits. I usually visit both sites several times per day. There's little point in starting a pale imitation of Cast Boolits here, when the sites are just a mouse-click apart. The two sites COMPLEMENT each other; they are NOT conpetitors.

THR is a great resource for general firearms info, and Cast Boolits does NOT deal with the same material we see here except in a peripheral manner. There's no way this website could ever compare with the depth of casting data at CB, or with the TWENTY-SIX THOUSAND members who joined just to communicate about cast bullets.

The atmosphere there is very much "High Road" and is a major reason for my being there ...and here.

If you are too lazy to bookmark that site and pay an occasional visit, I sort of feel sorry for you. You are truly missing the boat.

+1 to this. Cast Boolits is the go-to place for the collected wisdom on non-jacketed projectiles. No need to reinvent the wheel. I didn't vote in the poll because there wasn't a "Link to Cast Boolits" option.

Wasn't the earlier poll enough? ;)

That is what I was thinking. We just did this & it was up for days. I like reading the post about casting & think it would be a great idea. However I don't run the forum. The first poll to get an idea of how many wanted it for the admin was one thing but the second one seems disrespectful & pushy.

Also it seems like reloading is the first level and once you have become good at that, you go on to casting your own bullets - advanced reloading because this grants a lot more control over your loads and the possibility of increased precision, not to mention lower cost. To say we do not need to have a casting forum because other casting forums are already running is equivalent to saying we don't need a rifles section because other forums exist. The reason people return to this sight is not just the knowledge that is being freely given, but also the community of support. For instance I inquired to meanmrmustard about how he made a sight pusher for a mosin, and instead of giving me details or pictures, he offered to make one for me if I sent him the dimensions he needed. That is a perfect example of why people come back here and stick with this forum, because of the people!

Like BruceB I'm usually here at least once a day and over at Castboolits also. Both sites have a niche and the knowledge of casting and level of discussion at CB is second to none. It's no more difficult to click over to CB than change topics on THR.

This is why I don't see a need for the forum here. It seems that this a Ford/Chevy type of subject. People Seem to want to bite of their nose to spite their face. Just think about this. There could be a Glock/S&W/Marlin..... Subforum here as well. But why when there are already whole sites dedicated to those platforms?

Sub forum

Sub forum or whatever. Lets do it. I have been thinking about it for a long time, but really don't know where to start.
I really don't know what I need to get started.

Cast Boolits is a great site, like this one. Lots of experience, and very interested participants.

Why not just start a cast bullets thread, and see how it takes off? If there's sufficient interest, it'll stay on top.

Unfortunately, I dont think 100ish people is enough to start a sub-forum.

Currently, it does not appear that Casting is " RKBA" enough to warrant its own section.

Maybe once we can't find bullets on the shelves in stores it will be.

Oh, wait.................. Nvm.

Maybe permanently, like when they start banning them, things like Hollowpoints and.......

Oh, wait...... NVM.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you perceive this, THR is not on its own legs as a commercial venture.
That other casting site... I'm not so sure.

I'm fairly certain that targeted ads would generate a lot of income for THR, specifically in the bullet-casting area- what with all the new interest. I think that would be a great way to justify a casting subforum.

If you do the math on pay-for-click, and we got even 15% of the traffic that other place got just in that one subforum.... it'd be great for THR.

" But, I go to both sites" Good. Not everyone does.

When someone does a google search for casting, guess what comes up ?

Guess where they go ?

Guess who's banners get clicked when they need that ultra cast-o-matic 3000 mould pin set ?

Ya.

But, alas, much like in the other threads of this nature, we're preaching to the choir here... The Deacon isn't listening.
