Why is .410 considered such a terrible HD load?

Testing .410 buck in my .410 was interesting. Three foot vertical stringing at 20 feet. Perhaps if I had a .410 with no choke....

I'm not going to dispute the merits or shortcomings of .410 as an offensive round, but one night I was working in the ER when a young woman I knew came in after being shot by a jealous ex-boyfriend. He'd shoved a .410 single-shot Snake Charmer into her belly and put a load of 7 1/2 shot into her big cowgirl belt buckle. The buckle deformed into a cup and absorbed all the shot- she had some powder burns and a tremendous bruise, but no pellets got past the buckle at contact distance. She was released from the hospital the next day.

He did 12 years for attempted murder. If he'd been a couple of feet further back...

Rabbit.

what about the recoil reducing stocks sold by knoxx? i hear they reduce recoil by over 50%. they have videos of small girls leaning up against a post and firing shotguns and large rifles with the shoulder between the post and the rifle. if recoil is a issue at all id think that a knoxx stock would remedy that.

for some reason my computer wont play the video anymore, so this linc might be to the wrong video.

You can load the .410 in some single shot and double barrel pistols. I suspect the recoil is substantial

U CANNOT load .410's in ALL pistols that chamber .45Colt please dont try. BUT Works in this one:D though and recoil is FLAT OUT mild....about on par with a .44spl. IMHO

If memory serves me correctly, and sometimes it doesn't, about 15 or 20 years ago one of the main manufacturers came out with a little pump gun configured to be a 'home defender'. If I remember correctly it was .410 and a pump design with a pistol grip on the pump slide. It had a muzzle brake/flash suppressor and was marketed as the 'ladies home defence gun'. I can't remember the company's name though I want to say Marlin or Mossberg. I saw one at the NRA Convention in San Diego (wait a minute, that would be more like 30 years ago!).

The Mossberg /410 HD...neat little gun i bought one from 1991 for the Mrs. a bit ago off Gunbroker BUT frankly since she has become adept with my 12's(w/ reduced recoil buck) it never makes it out of the closet.

Who makes that pistol you posted above? I remember seeing them in the gunstore years back...

SERIOUSLY...my Knoxx Spec-Ops stock makes my 12 feel like a 20ga.

Its not that I would want to get hit with one. With me it comes down to practice. I can get twice as many 12 gauge shells for cheap practice of working the slide and blasting away at a target for the price of one box of .410.
Also, with a 12 gauge you can always step down to reduced recoil loads. Go back to full power 3" 00 buck if you need to. You can't step a .410 back up.
Last is that I like my 18" Mossberg 12 gauge. It throws cheap remington slugs like a rifle at 100 yards and it fits my shoulder perfectly. I would be an idiot to move to any other gun at this point.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't remember who made them. And there's nothing like a Flitz and Dremel custom ;)

Been there, done that, cylinder choke doesn't work any better at least with the 3 000 buckshot loads.

The way I see it, if I'm going to have to patch holes in the drywall, replace bloody carpet, and likely get prosecuted by the crooked officials out here, I might as well make sure the SOB is cold-dead.
