Why is an Olympic AR-15 Bad?

And therein lies the problem.
Here is an Olympic arms "M4" Equivilent
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct349.aspx
The price is $939.00

Here is a Colt 6920
http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin...ction&key=6920
The price is $965.00

So the price difference is less than the cost of a tank of gas..

The problem with your "claim" is that the website selling the Colt has it listed as "Out of Stock." Can't buy it. And Colt's 2012 Catalog and Price List has an MSRP for a 6920 at $1,115.00. The AR6720 is listed at $1,136.

Oly's basic GI-16 M4 is only $856.70 MSRP.

For a difference of $258.30 on the 6920, and 279.30 on the 6720.

Yeah, look at all that research...

Sure, dealer's can screw you over if you don't do your research, but picking and choosing your data just to support your position is equally dishonest.

It's the same crap in every AR thread. Someone justifies their purchse (reasonable or not) and kwelz comes in and talks trash about how anything but tier 1 is nothing but junk, regardless of the purpose or intent of the rifle. Only thing I'm surprised over is that the insult about just shooting dirt or hobby grade hasn't really been thrown around over and over as if shooting cardboard targets in a class at a range is shooting much less dirt.

Let's be honest, if you are paying colt prices there's no point to go Olympic. If you get a great deal or have an old olympic it's probably going to be just fine at the range doing anything you ask. It will probably be just fine dumping a mag worth in your living room too if it came down to it. If you plan on its use to be hd then a rifle focused more on reliability would be a better use of money. If you plan to take classes, buying a "class approved" rifle will keep you from being laughed at and with that abuse will probably be less headache as well. There are times and places where the Olympic rifle fits a role just fine. Any given example can be great or junk or anywhere in between. If you buy any rifle check the basics, replace the bolt and buffer/spring if it worries you and shoot at the range (sandstorm present or not) until you find a shortcoming of your rifle. Fix that shortcoming and keep shooting. Go shoot and figure out if the rifle you bought needs work or runs just fine. Inspect parts for wear and replace as needed.

this is just too good. to add anything to it would just wreck it but i had to at least quote it.

Which of these words are you failing basic English on?

As others have noted, finish was a bit rougher than other models, but it didn't effect shootability.

"Shootability?" Are 5 syllables too many for you?

No, but it is funny when people try to insult grammar use and then attack said person for failing to comprehend a word that doesn't even exist. Also, i'm pretty sure it would be "affect shootability".

Who pays msrp? Out of stock doesnt mean forever unavailable. My local GS has them for under a grand and i believe will ship to FFLs. If anybody is interested shoot me a PM.

I got fed up with AR threads a long time ago, whilst reading one of MANY "which AR?" type threads online, related to Stag, I brought up the plus package Stag offered which basically gave you everything mil-spec, for an additional $100. This was awhile back, keep in mind, and I think the stag was $800, or $900 with the plus package, and Colts at that time were $1200 at a bare minimum.

People then pounced all over that with comments like "oh great now they are just putting the features on it that should have been on it all along, and expect you to PAY EXTRA for it?"

the most hilarious response was something along the lines of (paraphrasing):

"These second-rate companies are now just going through the checklist of all the mil-spec requirements and putting them on their rifles, just to fill the requirement and please customers, but they still won't be quality rifles!"

I know fit and finish and stuff are important to folks but come on.

Related back to the OP, I don't think anything is inherently "bad" about an Oly. Maybe some aspects are "less good" than a Colt or other all-milspec weapon. Personally if I were buying new, the breaking point for me would be if the Oly is near half the cost of a Colt get the Oly, if the Oly is $200 or so cheaper than a PSA, get the Oly, but I doubt that would happen anytime soon. But if you inherited it, or found a great deal used, just go out and enjoy it.

Yeah you shouldn't trust a gun that goes bang every time you pull the trigger. From what I understand they aren't even parkerized under the front sight base!!!
A buddy had an Oly. The bolt broke at some point. The gas key came loose and later broke. It was an A2, but had an A1 front sight post...

It was accurate when it worked though. Just like Yugo are economical cars, when they aren't broke down.

As for my Oly experience, I think I shot my flash hider, which was installed with no peel washer or crush washer... I saw it go flying, but the range was packed and I didn't want to call a ceasefire just to find something to hang on the wall of shame next to my craftsman ratchets. The FSB was canted so much that I ran out of windage, maybe BM installed the bbl. The screws for the gas key also came loose - which I couldn't help but laugh at, since its a pistol cal upper. And it is a flat top, which was supplied with an A1 front sight post...

My Oly shoots dead on and runs 100%, now that I don't have a flash hider, removed and re-installed the bbl, replaced the A1 FSP with an A2, and staked the gas key screws.

To be fair, often nobody mentions that a certain AR is inferior until somebody else says something like "in spite of what the AR snobs say...". This is one such thread.
