Why is full-auto so much fun?

It can be extremely exhilarating because it's not something that everyone gets to do every day - forbidden fruit and all that.

To add something onto Trisha's earlier point ... like sex, it loses its flavour once one does it for a living ;)
 
Think about the visceral pleasure of shooting a gun.

Now imagine doing that 30 times in a few seconds.

Hence the fun.
 
Shooting Full auto has a purpose in the military IMHO. It's a free country so stimulate the economy if you want to. If you haven't experienced it go ahead. Military has to do it for a living just like you have to do your job for a living. Learn the purpose for shooting full auto though. Three round bursts and controlled rate of fire. Suppressive fire and all of that stuff, not like you will need it though. Good thing about full auto is at least use a Traversing and Elevation Machanism on a tripod sandbagged down and lay a good cone of fire out to 1500 to 1800 meters with a .50 cal machine gun if your rich enough. Gets into the dead space like small hollows and low laying areas that are not line of sight to the enemy. Mortars are better for that stuff than machine guns but then again that's another ballpark altogether.

I think there's something wrong with me. When I finally got a chance to shoot full-auto (an MP-5,) it didn't do much for me...
 
Me either - most FA-capable weapons I come across, I tend to switch to semi anyway. The thrill is gone - woe is me *sob* ;)
 
I like operating machinery. The more complex moving parts they have and the more power these machines can manage the hgher the fun factor (for me). Single shots and bolt actions are just static pieces of hardware.

They come with visceral pleasure now? Really, I like guns but I don't get some kind of thrill in my gut every time I pull the trigger.

No, they have moving parts. A good bolt-action is actually quite graceful in operation. You fire and then immediately reload. Nothing static there.

I only shoot semi's and bolt actions but I ask the same question about watching soccer on TV, World of Warcraft, square dancing, etc. Everyone has their thing. Sometimes you can't understand. Sometimes you don't need to understand. Just let people enjoy "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"
 
What's really fun, is shooting a 23mm ZU-23-2 in full auto. It eats the two 50 grenade belts in mere seconds and the recoil moves the thousand kilogram gun rearwards. For a while after that, a 7.62mm assault rifle feels like an airsoft gun. The good sides of mandatory service :)
 
Full auto is fun, but overrated and expensive.

What does look like fun, and I've never had the chance to try, is BELT FED. That looks like a friggin' hoot.
 
Shooting a full auto weapon is a blast until the novelty wears off. Once the novelty wears off then you realize that it's more of a PITA than it's worth because of all the cleaning you have to do.

Heading to Vegas next month, and the little woman is probably the most excited to hit the range for some FA fun. I'm a lucky man, she loves guns and cars almost as much as I do.
 
I think it's because the forbidden fruit is often sweetest. Eat it often, though, and it loses it's flavor. Especially if you're having to foot the bill!

Full Auto is fun and has a fetishistic quality in that it is forbidden (or just expensive) fruit. The NFA rules are bizarre and the only thing more mind-boggling is the whole '86 crap. THAT is what comes out of compromise about 2nd Amdt issues. Doing it illegally might be more fun, but 10 years at club fed just doesn't sound good to me.

Apart from that, my only full auto experience (so far) was in service and that was on the M-60 and the SAW. That was great in that I didn't have to pay for the ammo or clean the weapon (we shot range weapons for record on the belt feds so didn't have the chore of cleaning). It was easy to qualify on both and a lot of fun. If anyone offers me use of a belt fed with those conditions being met (and without having to sign my life away for some years) I'll be their ernest pal.

Would like to fire a Thompson also.
 
It is an expression of machismo. For all those who remember the news footage of Israelis kicking Palestinian butt (again) back in the 80s, shoving them into the Med in places like Tyre and Sidon, think of all those "freedom fighters" evacuating their camps, continually firing their rifles into the air on full auto. Need I say more? :evil:
 
Full auto (especially belt fed) is fun.......unless to have to hump the d@m pig (M60) for several days and nights on very little sleep with the tripod, spare barrel and a belts of ammo in the rain and mud, and oh yeah, keep it clean. Then when you finally do get to shot it, you only get 25 or 30 rounds and fire only 3-5 round bursts....NEXT SHOOTER !!!!

Now a 120mm smooth bore cannon (and the TC's M2 and the coax) on an M1 Abrams on range 203 at Graf or range 35 at Baumholder.......THAT's F'in FUN !!!! :D :evil: :D :evil: :D
 
Somewhere there's a photo that keeps circulating, showing a girl firing an M2 with a look of screaming glee. Anyone got a link?
