why is it so difficult to get carbon off stainless revolvers?

One can go to a local super market, and buy a can (or tube) of MAAS, a simple & cheap silver polish. It takes off all the burn marks off the cylinder with miminal rubbing.

Burn/carbon rings look worse than they really are because the black contrasts with the stainless. They are just as bad on a blued revolver, just don't show up as much. I don't worry too much provided the carbon is not caked on and causes the cylinder to drag.
