Why is my shooting range all shot up?

Ever since I began going to firing ranges on a regular basis
every one I visited had something in common, perforated tables
chairs, roofs, dogs, benches, so on and so on.

These ranges are all pretty well looked after but it is quite disconcerting when the folding chair you are using has about
60 .45 cal holes in it.

I was at another very well kept up covered range when it started to rain. Immediately my guns started getting drenched.
I looked up and and the tin roof over the shooting benches
looked like someone with minigun had ventilated the place.

What the heck is going on here? Are there that many accidental
and negligent discharges? I would hope people bent on shooting up equipment would be banned from the range and possibly
charged with vandalism.

Has anyone else seen this or seen anyone shoot up a firing range?

I'm afraid it's just damn fools being themselves... At one local range where I like to shoot, the Rangemaster has hung the 25, 50, 75 and 100 yard markers on a post next to the firing line. All of them are heavily perforated. He's added a notice saying "When you stop doing this to my range markers, I'll order some new ones!"

There are people who when no one is looking will shoot at anything. Its even worse on public lands where people dump their junk and shoot it all up. Kind of gives the rest of us a bad name.

Local club range offers a $1000 reward for the 'arrest & conviction of' anyone shooting up the facilities. As far as I know no one's ever been turned in.
Sure could use a grand myself.

my local public range is the same way.

only thing i can think of is that chairs, roofs, etc. are much easier to hit than the center of a target. see these same, numb from the chin up, ppl going down the highway.

Guess I am lucky!

The only thing that gets shot up at my range is the target stands down range. Those poor wooden frames really take a beating when the slug hunters go out to sight in their deer guns!

My favorite range must be lucky then. Other than a few ND's through the roof, the only things that get shot are the back fence posts. That's more from lack of planning on the range setup than from malicious intent of the shooters.

Always brings a smile to my face when I see some of the holes that have been placed throughout the shooting area of the indoor range I frequent. Last night tho, I witnessed a guy shoot 10 rounds from a rental Glock down range. When he was done shooting he laid the gun in his hands to look at the profile of the gun. Somehow, it went off and put a nice 9 mm hole in one of the lane dividers. Thankfully, whatever is in the lane divider stopped the bullet, but it did leave a nice hole
I would guess most of the holes are there from carelessness & a lack of fully understanding basic handgun safety.

The indoor range I go to has Balistic panels between stalls
but there are still plenty of holes in the place

My favorite at my range is the line of holes going through 6 or 7 dividers, roughly a foot in front of where peoples heads would be.

the 25 yd line but the 50 and 100 yd. boards and frames were in pretty bad shape. The covered section was still covered...at least I didn't see any holes in the roof. Even if a shooter is NEVER coming back to a range...why would they want to shoot it to pieces?

After visiting a public range at one of the local wildlife management areas south of town, I went and got a life membership at a private club and NEVER looked back. Trash cans and posted signs were engaged UPRANGE.

We've had idjits shoot our flagpole.

Keep in mind that if a range extends beyond your target frame, that if you fire "across" the range (ferinstance, you're at point 17, and you shoot at a target on frame 18), you have a high likelihood of hitting target stands, etc. - so don't do that.

The ranges I go to are left a little dirty by shooters who don't police their brass. Sometimes folks will shoot up weird kinds of things that leave rubble all over. Mostly folks shoot up paper though. I sure as heck don't like the idiots who shoot the frames to hell and back.

People shoot up frames becaause they feel the need to afix as many targets to it as possible rather than one that is centered on the frame. Wouldn't take too much shooting and errant rounds to tear up a frame. If people had to provide their own frames, they would last for a very long time for some reason or another.

They don't clean up behind themselves because the are either lazy or inconsiderate. I always leave my position "better" than I found it.

Shooting holes in flag poles and other range property isn't acciedental in most cases. It's folks wanting to see if that 7Mag will poke a hole in a flg pole or a fence post or whatever. And of course, it will.

Kind of sad.......

I belong to a local private range and over the past few years the log storage building/clubhouse has been taking quite a beating. It seems that some people don't like to see a lock on the gate of the local range, so they shoot it off, or loose of a mag at the clubhouse.
Over Christmas, it was discovered that several individuals stole a front end loader from the gravel pit a couple of miles away and completely destroyed the clubhouse. They were caught, and will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.
