Anybody besides me wonder why there have been no cartridges 2.5" or 30/06 length based off the WSM(404 Jeffery) style cases? I know Dakota has but they will never be mainstream. I know Ackley and some of the other probably have, but with the new slower powders we have today ... I wonder why the mainstream folks have not?

I kinda hate the belt on any cartridge that really has no need for one to headspace on. With the WSM sized boltfaces out there now there would be no reason to have to open up the face any more.

Think about a 2.5" WSM brass cartridges that could be made... with a good neck length...

.257 that would blow the doors off a .257 WBM

.264 that would be better than a .264 Win.

.277 that would add a little juice to the 270 WBM

.284 that would be "like" a short 7mm Ultra Mag to fit 30/06 actions

Its a rainy day and I got to thinking ...which is bad most of the time!

OH and while we are at it .....a 2.5" 284 Winchester, which everybody knows is a strong case ....for the same calibers!

When people start growing to be as big as Goliath and the forums are full of threads like "300 WM, 300 WBY, or 300 RUM for whitetail", I'm sure those 404 based thumper cartridges would be very popular.

Well the 2.5" version would fit a 30/06 action ... it would hold just a few more grains than a 2.5" version of the 375(belted case) that the 7mm Remington Mag, 264 Winchester mag, 257 WBM and others are based off of now. The plus may be a few extra grains of capacity... but the real plus would be the absence of the belt.

No real thumpers down in the area I was refering to...up there in thumperville you would need the full 2.875" case!

It was a rainy nasty day .... and I get to thinking ... sometimes that ain't good!

The current crop of WSM rounds are overbore now as it is, and if you thought that the 264 Win Mag had barrel erosion...........

The 7mm Dakota comes pretty close to what you want.

Any of those made(chambered) by Remington, Winchester, Browning, Salvage or any of the main stream gun makers? That was my point of thinking...none are..... PO Ackley's book is full of wildcats off 404 jeffery ...long and short too.

That 500 MDM and any of the Remington Ultra mags don't count ..they are 2.8" not 2.5". Run your seach again and use the 2.5" length as max.

No one mentioned the 375 and 416 Ruger. Both of those are 2.5" cases with a .532 case diameter w/ no belt. Coincidentally, I'm putting the pieces together presently to build a 6.5mm wildcat off of the 375 Ruger.
