Why no gas operated semi-autos in smaller calibers?

Because the recoil operated design was found to be perfect for the task and actual gas operation is too complicated to have any real value in a smaller sized pistol.
Works Okay in a huge hunting size gun, not so good in a defense or service size gun.

There have been a few gas "delayed" guns that use gas to keep the slide shut until pressures drop to safe levels, but they seem to be more oddities with their own problems.

Add in the extra weight and size from the extra cylinder and you complete the reason why there isn't any in the more standard sized pistols.

Try packing a DE on your hip for a day and you'll see why it's a freak that's only fun for use in specialized activities. A short barrelled carbine rifle is the same or only slightly heavier.

I do have a DE, it tames the heavy magnums to a nice mild recoil. Wondered why there wouldn't be a market for a 40/10mm/45acp that had half the recoil. Thanks for the answers.

there are some modified 1911 that are gas-op
