Why not make a direct 209 x small rifle primer adapter?

OK, I see the concept of the small rifle primer adapters made by cutting down a centerfire cartridge. But why not just make little top hats that could be directly loaded with small rifle primers and then put into a 209 breechplug?

Or do they already make them somewhere?

Why bother with spending the money for a primer adapter, when all you have to do is use 209-4 Remington primers. The 209-4 Remington primer is used to reload 410 shot shells. It has only half the fire of a standard 209 primer.
In the past two mounths I have shot close to 200 rounds useing Remington 209-4 primers with out any flyers.

Why do you want to convert a 209-primer gun to something else? Is there a problem using 209 primer? Is there an advantage to a smaller primer?

Thanks old snow! I'll order up some 209-4's and try them out.

Sleeping Dog, the problem as I see it is that the regular 209 is too hot for consistant ignition and the patterns tend to spread out. If you shoot just the primer in a 209 gun you will see sparks shooting out the front end. There are aftermarket breech plugs which fit a cut down centerfire cartridge instead of a primer.

Next question is where do you find these 209-4 primers? A quick search on Google has turned up nothing except a Remington company list of wholesale distributors, none of which is in my area.

M&M, thanks for the reply. I'll try to locate some 209-4 410-gauge primers at one of the local shops.

Then I'll have to go shoot some more to test this theory.

There aren't any fusils available for in-lines? There used to be some available for sidehammers (I have one to use 209's on a sidehammer). Other brands used small or large rifle primers. That's an option if you don't need speedy reloads.

What is a fusil? I've been out of BP shooting for 20 years, just getting back into the sport so I can hunt rats-with-hooves a little bit longer this year before they eat my garden again next year.

PRIMER ADAPTER

I've used an adapter on my drum and nipple system deer rifle for years. It replaces the nipple and uses sm rifle primers. Works great. According to BATF, however, they are not sure if this changes the legal status of the rifle, at least they couldn't decide when I contacted them for clarification about 5 years ago. I was trying to do the right thing, but I have never dealt with a ruder, more arrogant bunch in my life. I sure won't ever ask them for information again.

swampsniper, how would a change in priming cause a change in the legal status of the rifle? It's still a muzzle-loader, right? What changed?

If I could remove the breech plug of my 209-fired centerfire smokepole and replace it with an automotive spark plug, it would still be a muzzle-loader.

What prompted you to contact the folks at BATFE? Are you trying to wake a sleeping dragon?

When the inlines first started to appear, ATF had some question about whether they were a "firearm" in the legal definition. It was typical govt. confusion. This is the nicest way I can say it, it was worse. Best to leave them alone, maybe they will go catch a real terrorist. They really don't know why some folks don't like them, poor babies.
