Why not much talk about STI?

I called to order a Legacy without the "billboard" and they told me NO! You can only have it their way. I also don't like the ramped barrel or their cocking serrations. Their 2011 are great, especially in price compared to their SVI cousins.

Asking for no slide markings should actually make thier job easier. Just skip the billboard and slide serrations step.

You can order a LesBaer or Ed Brown with out koolaid markings. I think Fusion is the only company that offers a half way decent looking 2011. You could allways order a Fusion kit, get all the pieces you want together and send it to your favorite 1911 builder for a custom build.

Name me a 2011 without a ramped barrel...

Also, if you did indeed call STI, they would have told you they no longer produce the Legacy. Get your facts straight and be truthful before "bashing" a company ;)

Here's a quote from the STI website regarding custom pistols,

STI is currently expanding and improving processes within our custom shop and will not be accepting any new orders at this time. Look forward to a new and improved STI Custom Shop in the very near future.

Are they even an American company? That's some rubbish customer service there. I could understand at $700, but not at what a STI costs.

I have two Fusions and they are very nice pistols however, a tricked out Fusion isn't as inexpensive as they used to be. I'd still order another if I had the money and patience to wait for the build.

No Billboard

A custom smith ordered this STI Master frame and slide then built the gun himself.........then I bought it and after a while purchased this flat trigger from 10-8 performance then installed it myself.

STIs have what most 1911s do not have...reliability.

If I were a 1911 guy, I would purchase an STI. Period.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I've got the lowest end of the STI line, the Spartan and honestly its a good gun. My other 1911 is a Les Baer and the Spartan really is a good value. The higher end STI's look great.

There are other 1911's I'd rather have in that price range. Dan Wesson comes to mind.

Comparing CCO size guns (my next desired pistol)
I think I prefer the STI Guardian - AND MSRP for it is signifigantly lower ($1,110 vs $1,530)
Don't know what they REALLY sell for new, anyone know real-world price for those two?

STI Trojan from their custom shop, ordered in April 2010 and got it 19 weeks later, worth the wait. Between USPSA and just practice it has nearly 5000 rounds in about a year, not one failure. I too disdain their billboard on the slide, had STI's custom shop change the trigger, leave off the front serations and all logos, here is the result with hogue kingwood grips.

"Why not much talk"

According to the 2009 ATF manufacturing report, STI only made a total of 9,017 guns that year. Compare that with Kimber's 60,000+.

Yup. I've only seen two STI in gun shops over the years and I bought one of them, an LS9 that I paid dearly for.

My Strayer Voight is one of my all time favorite steel guns...

I like most of the STI offerings, I just don't buy factory built guns anymore...I prefer to build them myself. Next summers build will be a STI 2011 frame with a Commander slide in 9X23...I think it will be the perfect CCW piece.

STI makes a nice gun! Their 2011 (widebody) is a competition orientated, high capacity, modular tool and they do 1911 single stack tools too. Frames are polymer, cast, and forged. Models are gun game compliant as listed on their web site. They offer a lot of gun for the money, and purchasers can pick the price point that fits their needs. Yes, they import their base models, just like a lot of other companies - Springfield. It is about having a quality model available for the pocket book of prospective customers - think Scion, Toyota, Lexus = Toyota Motor Corp.

It's one of those pistols that's a once in a lifetime heirloom piece. Triggers, hammers, and bitching about "billboards" is superficial crap as far as I'm concerned; I'm not buying guns to look at, they are for competition, sport, and defense. If some of the "traditional" 1911 builders took notes from STIs quality builds, they'd sell more pistols. I ended up with one as it was several 100 cheaper than Fusion, and my local FFL cut me an even better deal. An insane deal on a .45 that pretty much outshoots the rest of my pistols.

Now, to your OP actual question: STI caters to shooters and they know that's all the advertising they need.

I recently had a chance to shoot a STI Trojan for several days and it was very nice...definately in a running with other $1k 1911s

The gross features were all there and well done, but the shortcomings in fine fitting were appropriate for it's price range

They, like Dan Wesson, are likely running at their manufacturing capacity and not enough folks have them to ask questions about them as often as comparable Kimber or Springfield models

STI makes guns for shooters concerned with performance. Most people are out to buy a gun to make a lifestyle statement.

Also, STIs can, at times, be a bit like maintaining a race car. In order to really make them sing, you have to be willing to invest a bit more time and effort into them.

If I had the spare $, a tricked up STI 40 cal is a fine 'Limited' pistol in USPSA. I prefer sleek and smooth, but I prefer performance even more. It's a tool, not a wall hanging.
