When people take pictures of hand guns I notice that they put something thru the trigger guard to cause the gun to tilt rather than lay flat, I guess. How does this improve the picture from if the gun were layed flat?

Thanks.

All it is is a prop.
It helps in the respect that a foward facing subject is always easier to shoot.
You don't have your family lay on the floor for the family portrait do you ?:neener:

depends on the effect I am looking for

Will there be a white outline of them when you're done or is your family in the porn business ?

What I find worse than the prop is all the garbage many put in the gun pic that comes out of their pocket. gun and wallet, keys, finger nail clippers. Com'on man. LOL LOL

I gives the photo dimension. To lay a gun down flat you have to have the camera pointing straight down to photograph. The result is a flat, boring 2-dimensional image. To prop up the gun slightly adds depth and more choices of camera angle and background. And you get more options in placing your pocket knife, car keys, whisky bottle, tumbler, playing cards, dice, sharks teeth, lava lamp, and other accoutrements.

Instead of using a prop, my solution is to arrange the gun on a sloping surface with the sights at a lower level than the trigger guard. The camera is aimed at an angle downward such that it is seeing a perfect side view of the gun, although at this point the picture is upside down. To use the photo, I turn the whole photo upside down to make it look right side up. Hope this is clear.
