I've never been able to figure out why so many gun photos show a shotgun shell resting in the trigger guard of the pistol being photographed..............

When taking a picture of a handgun; it looks better propped up rather than laying flat; a shotgun shell is just a handy thing to use. No other significance really. I use a short section of 1" clear Lucite dowel myself.

The shell raises the pistol for a better shot, and keeps with the theme. A Leggo, or Lincoln Log would also serve, but hey! That ain't right.

Because it won't fit in the chamber?:neener:

Seriously though, already answered. Is more "on topic" than a pen as a prop.

Because many of us aren't manicured well enough to use our booger hook in the pictures, and it's more gun-related than the wife's lipstick tube.

It's already been answered. People put shot shells to prop the gun up...

However, IMO too many people doing it don't do a good job. The shot shell doesn't hold the gun up high enough and it looks silly.
I've used a shot shell before, but prop the shot shell up with something smaller making it more effective (can't see the second item because the gun blocks it).

I use a Maglite flashlight since I don't have any shotguns shells laying around.

.
For those of us raised on St. Cooper's Four Commandments, the sight of something inside the trigger guard seems sinful. A clear violation of the intent of the 3rd law: Keep your bugger hook off the bang switch until ready to fire.

Seriously, I hope that no photog has been injured inserting an object into their model.

That goes for Presidents in the Oval Office with their interns, too!

(Ducking and running, sorry, couldn't resist...):D

Seriously, I'm a safety nazi when it comes to firearms...when I teach and when I shoot. But sometimes I think we need to all chill just a bit and have some faith that the picture taker has a shred of sense. Yes I realize that safety is paramount but if we want our guns to be 100% foolproof we'd encase them in a block of acrylic or have them cut up with a blowtorch.

My thoughts exactly!

I tried to use a shotgun shell to prop up my M&P 9MM, but it wouldn't work, it kept slipping and would not stand up. Obviously it does not work for all handguns.

Even though mine looks C&L it was completely unloaded. If I was president I might play with loaded interns but taking pictures of my pistols they are unloaded. (And I am a little obsessive compulsive when it come to checking twice / trice and then some)

Should use a cigar...

This was such an awesome idea, I couldn't resist. (you'll have to forgive the poor quality of the camera and even poorer quality of the cameraman)

This gives me a warm fuzzy feeling just looking at it. :D
