My wife and her friend are going to take their CCW classes tomorrow....finally. Too many bad things are happening close to home lately and they're both beginning to realize the police haven't figured out the Star Trek transporter gimmick just yet. I'm very pleased to say the least.

I also told them to go to the shop that sponsors the class early so they could fondle some pistols and get a feel for what they want. Some time in the next two weeks I hope to take them out so they can try the 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, and 10mm handguns I have out for a test drive so they can pick the proper caliber. The 9mm is already my wife's pistol. If she handles more guns and finds something she just "feels right with," I'll use her 9mm for a trade in or just buy her a new handgun. It all works out for me because I'll have an excuse to get more reloading stuff if she likes something we don't already have...muhahaha, my ulterior plans are coming to fruition.

Her friend does not own one yet and is a stout gal that could likely handle something bigger than the 9mm for her CCW purchase. Please advise on sub $500 handguns of any caliber. Used or new makes no difference, but that is her budget. I'm thinking she may be turned on by a Glock or XD in that price range, but her hands will tell her what she likes tomorrow at the gun store before class, after that, I think she'll only be picking out the caliber. BTW, she intends on it being in the CCW role and is not a purse carrier, so IWB will likely be mode of transport if she turns away from the revolvers that fit in a pocket.

To say the least, I'm a bit elated this time has finally arrived. Hopefully my range visits will now increase. Both will be steered to Pax's website for a common sense approach to self protection to demystify all the hoohah. I'm kicking myself for not steering them there already.

Pax has the best "how to" on fitting a handgun that I've seen. Bring this section to their attention before they do anything gun handling so that they know what to look for in fit. Point out that an "ugly" gun that fits an individual's hand is better than any gun that doesn't (as long as you're talking about quality firearms).

$500 and under could be a challenge, but once they find what "family" of handgun fits them they should be able to find one in that range. If it's a 1911 that fits there are inexpensive ones that abound coming out of Armscor. They may not handle having 10,000 rounds put through them, but I doubt they'll be shooting competition. A BHP can be had for under $500 if you look for the FM version from Argentina. I have one as my training gun and it has had well in excess of 5,000 rounds through it without a problem. Used Glocks are out there. XDs can sometimes be had for under $500 out the door. Trade in Sigs can be found under that price as well.

Well, I'm a bit short on time to have them study up before tonight, but I doubt my wife's friend will be purchasing tonight. But, as stated, I told them to go early and get a feel for what they like and go from there.

The 45 and 9mm are both Taurus MilPro pistols and have been utterly solid. But if it don't fit, they won't shoot it well. Wife's friend went shooting before and was shooting the 9mm, she was whacking bullseyes like you wouldn't believe from 21 feet.

Jeepmor, you don't need any advice. You're doing just fine :D:D:D

(We need an APPLAUSE SMILEY!!!!!)

I will say, not to be a wet blanket, that the women I've talked to at the range that had Taurus guns didn't like the triggers much. Too long and heavy. OTOH, they're a good price. She's just going to have to see how one would work for her. Myself, I'd recommend the XD, but that's because that's what I started with, and you can still get a decent $500-ish price for them. My problem with them is concealability. I found it a bit big and clunky to easily conceal, so the single stack works better for me. Maybe a Bersa? My UC9 isn't as accurate as my Kimber, but it also didn't COST what my Kimber did, LOL.
