One thing I don't often see on these kind of forums, is including your wife in your self defense plans. As a partner in marrige and on the journey of life, why not include her in any training plans, range practice, any MA training you may do weather krav maga or whatever.

It's almost been 40 years since I said 'I do', and in that time, the better half and I have always worked together on any plans we had. House defense, secure the kids room, who keeps what revolver where, and making sure each knows the others mind.

Now, with both of us being retiries on social security, we keep up the training with even more vigor since we figure we're at the prime target range for young criminals looking for a easy score. We practice scaning our environment, muttering to each other any possable threats we may see before the other, keep track of possable weapons to use since we can't carry a gun in the peoples republik of Maryland. The wify keeps a couple of leagal non-firearm weapons in her purse, as do I in my pockets. We practice together on the shooting range at least once a week with our handguns. We figured a long time ago, a team working together would be a harder nut to crack.

How many here train with thier wives?

Working on it!

It took a quick, pushy pan handler in an Atlanta parking garage and her watching the movie Taken ( http://microsites.craveonline.com/taken/ ) , but now she can send rounds in the bad guy's general direction with a service sized 9mm.

We're working on the marksmanship. I am also going to slowly try to get her shooting the shotguns.

Going with the ladyfriend today to take a class and get our Utah non-resident CCW's.

I can count her in on my plans for when the zombies (or real threats) come. :)

I sure do. We have a plan for home and discuss strategies for dealing with problems out and about. Of course she is proficient with most of my arms, we plan range time together and practice at home.

I would hate to actually be involved in a situation with a partner who was not ready for the task.

My wife was fairly well trained when I met her. She had been training other women in what they called Ladies' Handgun Clinics in the Raleigh area, and was a pretty decent IPSC shooter and RO as well. She'd been to Carlos Hathcock's class, back when he was still teaching.

Since we married, we've done several different classes together and individually with the other in support. We went to Andy Stanford's Snubby Summit and Glock Summit together, and most recently we both took Louis Awerbuck's Handgun Refresher. In 2007 she did Louis' carbine class while I loaded magazines for her, the year before I took his shotgun class and she watched out for me and took notes during the range sessions. We've drilled on mutually supporting tactics as well, both on our own and with trainers to supervise.

As usual, Carl is spot on with his comments.

Absolutely. While she doesn’t have the passion for it that I do she recognizes the need & takes at least one shooting class per year. We’re actually going down to Todd Louis Green’s Aim Fast Hit Fast class in New Mexico next week as part of our annual family vacation. The Little Dude will get some uninterrupted grandma & grandpa time too so everyone’ll be happy. We’ve been together for about 11 years now & she started training last year. It can be a long road to get her involved- you MUST do it on her terms, but it is very worth it.

Nothing says “Hard Target” quite like momma & her 6yo-sized 4yo, both in their Shiv Works ECQC World Tour sweatshirts.:what:

I head to the range at least once a week, with my wife. We practice both marksmanship and defensive tactics. We often rehearse calling out directions to our son as we shoot.

my bride did fighting pistol with me in camden tn and it changed her. the class requests you read cooper and andy s prior to class and she did..

she had a mental change during portions of the class and is now considering more training, ccw and now 'sees' clearer.

not sure if i posted up here but she was seriously 'interviewed' here in raleigh back around christmas and it scared me how obvious and planned this guys plans were...i wasnt with her when it happened but 'we' got lucky that night.

but yes...we now talk WAY more openly about safety, security and the difference between an AR ( the black one honey...) and the AK ( the one with the ( the curly Q mag honey) :p
