Wife got me a WASR 10 for Xmas... few Q's

My wife, God bless her soul, got me a WASR 10 for Xmas. Now, she doesn't know anything about these, but knew that I was looking for one.

My question is, where does it say what trigger group it has? I looked around the trigger itself and saw nothing that said Tapco on it.

Also, what is trigger slap, and how bad is it? When does it "slap" you (at what point during firing)? Is there a way to avoid it while shooting with the Century Arms trigger? Or do you need to swap out to the Tapco? And how much does a Tapco trigger group cost?

Also, I looked at the sights, and they appear to be on straight (just by eyeballing them). How can I tell if they're canted?

i know what you mean by "first AK"... But my WASR-3 says TAPCO USA G2 or 62 on the upper left side of the trigger itself (you might need good lighting to see it)

Depending on where you are with the compliance game, you may just want to order a Tapco or Red Star tigger.

What do you mean by "compliance game"? Sorry, I'm a WASR newbie. Also, any idea how much Tapco or Red Star triggers cost?

Tapco G2 trigger is ~$40, the Red Star is $85 - it's also fully adjustable.

You can get a parts combo from Copes Distribution (http://www.copesdist.com/ak47.htm) for $49.99, which includes a Tapco G2 trigger, a US made gas piston, and a US made slant brake.

Is your WASR a lowcap (10 round single stack) or highcap (double stack - takes the typical 30 rounders)? If it's a lowcap and you aren't converting to highcap, you probably don't have to worry about the compliance rules. Also, is your WASR a fixed buttstock and pistol grip, or the dragonov style stock with integrated grip? Basically, your WASR can't have more than 10 imported parts on it (obviously not all parts of it count) - WASRs have 15 parts that count towards this, 16 with a muzzle brake / flash hider. The FCG counts as 3 parts, the gas piston is another, and a US made pistol grip is another. Having all these parts brings your imported count down to 10. The rules are pretty confusing. I just had to make sure mine had those 5 parts on it, since I converted mine from a single stack lowcap to a double stack. I also added a flash hider on mine, but since it's US made, I still have 10 imported parts on it. If it was not US made, it would have 11 imported parts and would not be in compliance with section 922(r).

Since you can't see the link right now, "Trigger Slap is caused by out of spec Fire Control Group parts, specify it occurs when the rifle's bolt recoils hits the hammer which in turn moves down and locks under the disconnector. When the hammer moves the disconnector so It can be locked into place ready for the next shot, the back of the disconnector catches slightly on the trigger and causes it to "slap" back against your finger. This can cause pain and discomfort when shooting."

Mine's a double stack with pistol grip & stock. So does that mean I can do the trigger swap or not? I've done some searches on here, and it seems you can also dremel off the top of the trigger hardward so it doesn't contact the hammer/bolt.

Yes, you can swap triggers without problems. Doing so would only increase your US parts count, which is fine.

The link I originally posted shows you how to dremel off the Century trigger to fix trigger slap. This is the cheapest way to go. You can easily do this to fix trigger slap, if you have it.

I have no idea why Century would put a Tapco G2 trigger on a lowcap (mine), but not on the more "expensive" highcap (yours). I guess most things Century does or does not do have no logic behind them whatsoever. Your's possibly was put together by Century a bit earlier than mine.

I have a SAR-1 that I got NIB. First trip to the range was a big disappointment. Groups at 50 yards looked more like 00 buckshot. It took about 300 rounds to break in the barrrel. Not is is average for an "AK". One thing I did learn was that if you are shooting it from a bench you must keep a hand firmly on the hanguard. It really increased accuracy. Mine has no muzzlebrake so it jumps around quite a bit and has to be firmly held. If you do have trigger slap, you can fix it without buying new parts by reworking fire control group. Trigger slap is kinda a subjective dillema..

My WASR-10 has it, but it doesn't bother me at all. If it were gone I wouldn't be dissapointed though.

But, not a significant enough problem to make me want to fiddle around with that sheperds crook thing..

completely breaking down a WASR takes all of 5 minutes. it's a terribly simple job. my WASR had trigger slap, and it hurt. i popped out the trigger, dremeled off the extra piece, and the slap went away. taking apart the trigger group looks more intimidating than it is.

So I picked up my WASR-10 yesterday, and lucky for me it says "Tapco USA G2" on the trigger. Trigger slap averted. Picked up an extra 30 rounder, too. There's a mild amount of wobble, but they guy at the shop said it lessens when the mag is full.

I picked up my WASR10 for $ 289 - never looked back. No trigger slap, no mag wobble, no problems at all.

The only problem now is that with my 1st AK, I'm looking to step up and get a more upscale one like a Vector or Arsenal

Both of the magazines on mine wobble all over the place when empty, but when loaded up are as firm as I could ask for.
