I was shocked too! Her boss got one and she tried it and liked it. So...we have the obligatory 10/22 in the safe but that is the only rimfire we have (the boss has the CZ)

so..what is the best buy for a paper punching .17 with decent trigger/accuracy from the box?

she won't want to spend more to have it worked on, so hence the out of the box wish for decent...

thanks

I have a Savage 93R17-GV. Factory wood stock, bull barrel. It is a tack driver and I got it for right at 200 bucks. I would stay away from the synthetic stock because they are pretty cheap feeling and barrel heavy. Marlin is also a great one for the money.

For info all about rimfires, check out www.rimfirecentral.com They have all the info you could need. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on .17 HMR. Good luck.

CZ 453, with single set trigger option, if they ever release it for .17HMR. Otherwise, the CZ 452's are hard to beat. They're a little more expensive than the Marlin or Savage rifles, but they are worth it, IMO.

I looked at Remington, Savage, CZ, Marlin & Ruger while shopping for dad's x-mas gift... he finally settled on the Marlin, though I felt the CZ and Savage were fine rifles in their own right.

I haven't taken the 917VSF apart yet but it's supposedly got a very easy to adjust trigger... though i can't find any documentation of how to do it in the owner's manual or Marlin website (darn lawyers)

What's a good handgun in that caliber? I have only seen some 1911 uppers in that caliber.

the Savages now come with the accu-trigger. might have to look for one, since they were just released.

I can't speak for the Savage in the .17 line but I recently bought one in .22-250 and it's highly accurate and a sweet shooter.

I know the Savage .17s are averaging slightly over $200 around here which is not bad for that quality of a bolt rifle.

Ruger has 3 revolvers in either .17HMR or convertible .17HMR/.17HM2

I have a Marlin 917V .17HMR that I picked up at Wally World (yeah, I know  ) last year and it's out-of-the-box capable of quarter-size groups at 100 yards if I pay attention to what I'm doing. Mine seems to prefer CCI ammo over Hornaday. I used the factory 2-piece mounts to hold a Bushnell
4-12x40 AO scope.

Fit and finish for this rifle is not bad, but for $179 I wasn't expecting high quality. The heavy barrel makes the rifle very front-heavy so shooting from a rest is important for accuracy. The stock is typical Marlin, not pretty but functional. I spent about 5 minutes to sand the barrel channel to free-float the barrel.

The trigger sucks, but a spring replacement from a BIC pen cures the sticky feel. RifleBasix makes a decent trigger kit for it now. A good stock and a bedding job should make this rifle a very accurate shooter.

The marlin trigger is not adjustable. There is a trick you can do with a clicky-pen string and some shim stock, or there is the Rifle Basix replacement. The trigger trick is nice, but we'll see how the rifle basix goes in a week or so.

As for the original question, as much as I like my Marlin 917v, if you aren't going to do some work to it, then I would have to say either the Savage 9317 or the CZ 452.

I have a Marlin 917VS that has become one of my favorite rifles but now that Savage has put their Accu Trigger in their rimfires, I would take a look at the laminate stock Savage model (sorry, don't know the model off hand).

I have a Savage 93R17-BVSS which is the laminated/stainless with heavy barrel. I did replace the trigger in mine woth one from RifleBasix for $65. It is adjustable from 10oz-24oz. And on a calm day it is cabale of 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

As far as handguns go, I bought a 6" stainless revolver from Taurus. Pretty good little gun, and the price was $300. Good luck

I just bought a Savage 93R17 in December to train my wife and kids to shoot. The model we bought has a synthetic stock and my wife loves shooting it. The trigger's a little heavy, but I am not worried about for now. The new model has the accutrigger which I have heard great things about. You can't beat Savage for the dollar. They are accurate from the box.
